According to your worldview, what value does a human person have? How does your position affect your stance on controversial bioethical issues, such as abortion, designer babies, and stem cell research?

In our readings this week, White (2020) brings up an important point regarding the value of a human being. He proclaims that we have the complex ability to recognize aspects of right and wrong. In addition to this, White (2020) insists that the ability to make ethical judgements separates our status from other creatures. I strongly believe that as human beings, not only are we able to come up with solutions to difficult situations, but we are also able to recognize our own self-worth. I think that this is a trait that most definitely sets us apart from other creatures as well. I stand by the idea that a majority of our motivation stems from identifying our self-worth, and recognizing how much we are truly capable of. Furthermore, our unique trait to emphasize with others is also a trait of great importance; especially in healthcare. With this in mind, when it comes to topics like abortion, designer babies, and stem cell research, I think that it is important to steer clear of the mentality that one’s perspective on these controversial issues are superior to the rest. Indeed it is important to recognize your own beliefs about such issues, but one should never disregard another’s opinion, as they are all subjective.

A human person is of great value. Although God created the humans as his image (White, 2020), he made each and every one different. According to White (2020), the person has to be cared for as a whole, which includes the soul as well, not just the body. I agree because in my worldview, the person has a mind, body, and spirit. I personally try to not involve myself in controversial topics such as abortion, designer babies, and stem cell research because of how debatable it can get. Even though I am a believer, I respect the choices of each person. I believe that God created it all, and if he did not want for certain things to exist, he would not have allowed the human race to come up with such things. Then again, science is behind designer babies and stem cell research. As far as I know science does not believe in God’s creation, so humans come up with solutions. Everyone has different stance, and that will depend on their worldview.
