1) What are some of the ways that beliefs about “beauty” are circulated in contemporary North American society? What are some of the possible negative consequences the beauty ideal may have on women, men, trans, and/or non-binary people; people of colour; people with disabilities; older people; etc? In your answer, you must discuss at least 2 relevant course readings.
You are encouraged to also provide self-reflexive analysis of your own experience of the “beauty” ideal. For instance, you could identify a quote in one of the readings that resonated with you and describe how this quote relates to your own personal experience. Please note that you should only share experiences you are comfortable sharing with others.
Please note that self-reflexive analysis is not about storytelling. In other words, it is not sufficient to just tell a story about your life. Rather, you must reflect critically on how your life experiences have been shaped by larger institutions of power (e.g. the family, religious institutions, the media, etc). The key thing that differentiates self-reflexive analysis from storytelling is bringing a critical eye to social institutions of power and demonstrating awareness of oppression.
