  • Learning Outcome: Students will identify and analyze the theological, historical, cultural, and institutional forces that shape the dynamics of interfaith engagement. Description: The history of interfaith relations is marked by notable achievements and milestones on the one hand, and setbacks and controversies on the other. For this assignment, students are expected to: 1. Select either a milestone or controversy not formally part of the course curriculum (Nostra Aetate, the Willowbank Declaration, Dabru Emet, A Sacred Obligation, A Common Word Between Us and You). In order to ensure a wide variety of topics, students will list three choices of potential milestones or controversies by Jan. 19, and Prof. Diamond will approve one of the topics for the essay. 2. Conduct independent research on the selected milestone or controversy using credible resources (books, peer-reviewed articles, media reports, Internet, etc.). Prof. Diamond will review appropriate resources in class in the second week of the semester (Wikipedia is not one of them). 3. Write a 5-6-page paper that summarizes the milieu of this milestone or controversy, the event’s legacy, and its broader lessons for interfaith relations. Please remember that this is a course in Interreligious Experience and Engagement, so your essay must focus on religious issues involving two or more faith communities. Your paper should address the following: · Date(s) of event · Faiths represented · Principal documents/proclamations of milestone/controversy · Individuals, institution and organizations that played key roles · What is the historical, cultural, and religious background of the milestone or controversy? · What issues sparked this particular event? · What is the legacy of the event? · What broader lessons for interfaith relations can we learn from this milestone/controversy? Style: Select your essay topic and begin researching and outlining your paper early in the semester. Be sure to include a clear and concise thesis, a body of evidence, and a conclusion in your essay. The style required for this class is CMS, MLA, or APA. Double-space your paper and use 12-point font. Cite references in-text according to CMS, APA, or MLA guidelines and put a bibliography at the end of your paper. Please do not exceed 6 pages of text for the essay and be sure to use Word (not Google docs) for the paper. Post a copy of your Interfaith Case Study in the Assignments folder of Brightspace before class on February 14. Formative assessment: Students are strongly encouraged to write a first draft of the paper and submit it on Brightspace no later than five days prior to the assignment deadline. Prof. Diamond will provide written feedback in Brightspace. In addition, students may discuss their drafts by appointment in the Zoom virtual office. Summative assessment: Be sure to review the detailed set of essay rubrics used by the instructor to grade papers. A final Interfaith Case Study grade is awarded based on the rubrics of argumentation, support, analysis, expression, and style.
