What I have already Starting a Business (August 2027-August 2058) My mother arrived in the United States in 1980 with nothing but a $20 bill in her pocket. Her father—a once-famous scholar in China—had been locked up by the communist party for supporting democracy. To support herself, my mom worked three minimum-wage jobs, one of them being a live-in nanny so she could have a place to sleep at night. During this time, she studied extremely hard for the GMAT, got accepted to Stanford Business School, and consequently obtained a part-time job at IBM. Upon graduation, she was faced with the decision of accepting a prestigious managerial position at IBM or going back to Beijing to start a business from square one. She chose the latter and founded an IT services company in 1993 with my dad. To acquire customers, my mom went door-to-door selling her product regardless of rain or snow —even when she was pregnant with my older sister. Fast forward to 2011, and her company— once comprised of just her and my dad—had 10,000 employees, and went public on the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE). To this day, my mother is the hardest working person I’ve ever encountered. As cheesy as it sounds, she inspires me to follow in her footsteps and eventually start my own company.
