Shalice Jackson In the 1970’s homosexuality, better known as sexual deviance was thought to be a mental disorder. Gay men and women across the country were subjected to a variety of treatments aimed at curing their condition. Doctors believed that aversion or shock therapy could cure an individual from the homosexuality that they suffered from (Chicago Public Media, 2022). These thoughts were noted in the Diagnostic & Statistics Manual (DSM) and thereby thought of as a law. Because of this many people lost their jobs. Moreover, the social context has changed drastically for gays and lesbians since the 1970’s. Much of the world has become more accepting of homosexual acts and relationships (Associated Press & NORC, 2015). In fact, in recent years these changes have accelerated. Society’s changing attitudes towards gays and lesbians can be used as evidence that sexuality is socially constructed because it confirms that sexuality is a product of human definition and interpretation shaped by cultural and historical contexts. According to the Associated Press & Norc (2015), support for same sex marriage has trended upward across demographic groups, but sizable differences exist based on race/ethnicity and age. In addition to this, the fact that youth are more accepting of sexual diversity than the elderly is further proof that sexuality is a social construct. The statistics show that the level of support among White people (58%) is significantly higher than that of Hispanic people (50%) and Black people (46%). Since homosexuality is no longer considered to be a disease, statistics like this can be cited as proof that the general public has become more accepting of others differences throughout time.
