Rather than checking your word count, I am much more interested in reading succinct, lucid, original, creative essays. 🙂 (i) Write an essay on any one of the following films showing how the film (or a particular scene in the film) exemplifies one of the theme(s) discussed on the course: Mean Streets; Salaam Bombay! Taxi Driver; Midnight Cowboy; Blade Runner; Metropolis; The Matrix; Eyes Wide Shut; Manhattan; Manhattan Murder Mystery; Scenes from a Mall; City of God; Last Exit to Brooklyn; La Haine; Wings of Desire; Sex and the City; Night on Earth; Lost in Translation; Crash; Do the Right Thing; American Beauty; Parasite; Les Miserables (Or any other film you like, subject to consultation and agreement with me first). (ii) Choose a painting, a work of art that depicts / represents some particular aspect(s) of modern urban life & culture in an especially striking way. Analyse & interpret the painting / work of art from the point of view of its relevance to theme(s) presented in the course. (You may also use a building, a piece of architecture/ public space, a piece of urban material culture, music, dance or performance, subject to consultation and agreement with me first). (iii) Identify a street or neighbourhood in Cork that has the characteristic attributes of a good urban scene / space as analysed and informed by ideas from Jacobs & Loffland and from Simmel & Benjamin on the relationship between city milieux, civility, and character-formation. Describe some of the features of the street scene / urban neighbourhood, and show how they ‘work’ to make this a successful / sustainable, lively & liveable city space. And / or / conversely, identify a street or neighbourhood in Cork city that ‘isn’t working’, a part of the city that is dead or dying and becoming un-liveable, and indicate some of the causes of its disease and demise -and suggest perhaps some fixes.
