Cynthia Bautista, The social issue am I presenting today is care of the elderly that have a disability. Elderly care serves the need and requirements of senior citizens. It encompasses assisted living, adult daycare, long-term care, nursing homes, hospice, and homecare. Elderly care emphasizes the social and personal requirements of senior citizens who wish to age with dignity while needing assistance with daily activities and with healthcare. A lot of elderly care is unpaid or receive low pay. Elderly care includes a broad range of practices and institutions as there is a wide variety of elderly care needs and cultural perspectives on the elderly throughout the world. Many studies have looked at the role of women as family caregivers, who are usually women who range from 59% to 75%. The average caregiver is in their 40’s, married, and worked outside the home earning an income of $35,000. Although men also provide assistance, female caregivers may spend as much as 50% more time providing care than males. Now let’s take a look at the elderly that have a disability. A disability is any condition of the body or mind impairment that makes it more difficult for the person with the condition to do certain activities (activity limitation) and interact with the world around them (participation restrictions). There are many types of disabilities such as those that affect a person’s vision, movement, thinking, remembering, learning, communicating, hearing, social relationships, and mental health. Although people with disabilities sometimes refers to a single population, this is actually a diverse group of people with a wide range of needs. Two people with the same type of disability can be affected in very different ways. Some disabilities are actually not visible or may not be seen (hidden). Disability has three dimensions those are impairment, activity limitation, and participation restrictions. Disability can be related to conditions that may have been present at birth and may affect functions later on in life, including cognition,which is memory, learning, and understanding. Elder care can have its challenges, and those with a disability, it can be even more of a challenge for the caregivers.
