Reread the section on Erikson in the Lifespan Development chapter. Then, respond by creating your own example of Erikson’s psychosocial stages of development theory. Format your lab as indicated below:
Paragraph 1. Identify your current psychosocial stage. Using your text and other sources of your choice.
Paragraph 2. Give at least one example from your real life of an issue (“crisis”, as identified by Erikson) that is typical of your stage of development. Elaborate and be specific.
Paragraph 3. Explain how your crisis could have a positive resolution by the end of the stage. Explain how the resolution could impact the development of the future psychosocial stage(s). To show that you understand the full weight of the resolution of each crisis and its effect on the continuum of psychological development, describe effects through at least three stages. Be sure to name the stages specifically. See the example below.
Positive Resolution Example: An infant that is in the “Trust vs. Mistrust” stage will learn to trust his caregiver and trust in his own worth if given proper care. This enables the child to establish trusting relationships with others in the future and gives the child the independence to attempt independent behavior in Stage 2, “Autonomy vs. Shame and Doubt”. Because the child has learned to trust himself and others in “Trust vs. Mistrust” and gain independence in “Autonomy vs. Shame and Doubt,” the child feels confident to take charge of some of his activities in Stage 3, “Initiative vs. Guilt”
Paragraph 4. Explain how your crisis could have a negative resolution by the end of the stage. Explain how the resolution could impact the development of the future psychosocial stage(s). To show that you understand the full weight of the resolution of each crisis and its effect on the continuum of psychological development, describe effects through at least three stages. Be sure to name the stages specifically. See the illustration below.+
Negative Resolution Example: If in the stage, “Trust vs. Mistrust”, the infant does not receive proper care, he may learn to mistrust the caregiver and mistrust his own self-worth. As a result, the child does not trust others, reducing the confidence needed to attempt independent behavior. The child that does not develop trust is at risk for experiencing shame and doubt in Stage 2, “Autonomy vs. Shame and Doubt”. Feeling ashamed and doubtful of being successful, the child feels guilt and a sense of inferiority in taking on life’s tasks in Stage 3, “Initiative vs. Guilt”.
