However, the audience for these news articles may not realize that they can seek out the original scientific study to understand the findings with greater detail and draw more informed conclusions.
!!!!For this assignment, you will locate a news article that discusses a scientific study and then locate the original scientific study to analyze how the study was portrayed in the news article. !!!!
First, find a recent (i.e., WITHIN THE PAST YEAR news article that discusses a psychological study and then locate the original scientific article that was discussed in the study. Second, read both articles (i.e., the news article and the original, scientific article) and pay attention to the methods, findings, and conclusions and how these were discussed in the news article. Third, write an APA style paper using the following format and answer the following questions:
Introduction: introduce the purpose of the paper and briefly summarize of the news article and the scientific article.
Accurate portrayal: discuss two separate aspects of the scientific study that were accurately discussed in the news article. How did the journalist manage to discuss these aspects of the study in a way that was understandable to the lay public while also remaining accurate to the original study?
Improvement needed: discuss two separate aspects of the scientific study that were not accurately discussed in the news article. What did the original article state versus what was stated in news article? What inaccurate conclusions might a reader of the news article draw if they only read the news article? How could the journalist have stated these aspects of the article more accurately?
Drawing conclusions: what conclusions and recommendations does the journalist draw from the scientific article? How do these compare with those that could actually be drawn from the study?
Conclusion: Overall, how well did the journalist share the scientific findings (consider accuracy, breadth, depth, and readability for a lay reader)?
Lastly, paper clip a copy of the entire original article to your stapled paper. Your paper should be between 4-6 pages, double-spaced.
