IMPORTANT :For this discussion I want you to focus on your own opinion and not use outside sources because it’s a class discussion. For this week’s discussion, I want to focus on how you feel about the current state of race and racism in the United States. As I’ve mentioned in class, we currently have the most diverse Congress and federal courts in U.S. history, as well as increasing diversity at the state and local level. The Black Lives Matter movement was the largest social movement in American history and went international. Discussions of race are more commonplace, even if contentious.
On the other hand, white supremacists movements are active and have been given legitimacy through right-wing news outlets and politicians. Covid-19 was, at least initially, painted as a disease linked to Asian immigrants, resulting in record numbers of hate crimes towards the Asian community. The great replacement theory is relatively mainstream and there are attacks on discussions of race/racism in the classroom. Where do you think we will be in 5 and 10 years on issues related to race? Do you think things have improved regarding race in the last ten years? Why or why not? What are some examples? Do you think things will be better in ten years in regards to race/racism? Why and in what areas? Lastly, where do you think we’ll be by the mid-point of the century (2050) on issues related to race? Will things be substantially different than they are today? How?
