I attended the alcoholics anonymous support group at the time and location listed above.
About the group meeting: Discussion Meeting
Discussion meetings are for general discussion of recovery-related topics. There is usually a Chairperson and a Leader. Generally, the Chairperson reads the preamble, followed by the Serenity Prayer, and will ask if anyone present is attending their very first AA meeting. You may raise your hand at that point and give your first name if you like. This is not mandatory. Another member may read from the Big Book on “How It Works.” The Leader then picks a topic that relates to alcoholism and anyone who wishes may talk on that topic. Usually the person speaking is not interrupted. We each share our own experience on the topic and don’t address what someone else says. Many discussion meetings are “open,” and spouses or loved ones often attend as observers.
Based on your observations and problems identified during the meeting, describe the impact of a substance use disorder or behavioral addiction on an individual’s life
List at least two recovery-oriented goals of two individuals in the meeting you attended and examples with descriptions of how they were engaged in their recovery goals
Observation #1 A woman in her early 40s was at the meeting as she stated she used alcohol consistently for 12 years. She added that she has 4 children and she has none of them in her care. she said that everytime she drinks she ends up in places where she has not remembered before drinking. SHe stated she is currently homeless and all of her children are with their dad. She stated that one of her goals is to see her children again and build a relationship with them and the other goal is for her to get a job and find her some stable housing arrangements. She seemed engaged because she continously shared her experiences and reflected on her past to relay what went wrong, how could it have been better and what needs to happen to move forward.
Observation #2 A male in his late 20s was at the meeting and stated that he not only used alcohol everyday but also methamphetamine. He stated that he used alcohol more often but would use methaphetamine at times to cope with the loss of his mother. He stated that he lost his mother in 2020 and things were going well until one day it just dawned on him that he did not have his mother to vent to and talk to like her normally could. He stated that things eventually took a turn for the worse and he began to use alcohol more often. He stated that one day he went to work and drank alcohol on his shift — he stated he had an exact amount of 10 beers before he got aggressive with a co worker and his boss eventually fired him. one of his goals he said were to finish hisroad to recovery, visit his mother’s grave and get a job. He seemed engaged because he unlike many others, brought a notepad to the meeting.
Describe how and why a referral to a support group or meeting can support achievement of mental health counseling goals. When considering level of severity of symptoms as related to the current version of the DSM diagnosis, explain what diagnostic level(s) may be the most appropriate for referral to these groups and why.
