Frances Benjamin Johnston
Set up photography studio in Washington D.C. in 1894
Considered to be one of the first female photojournalists in the US
From early on, she was conscious of her role as a pioneer for women in photography, telling a reporter in 1893 that she believed photojournalism could be a profitable profession for women.
In 1899, the principal of the Hampton Normal and Agricultural Institute in Virginia commissioned Johnston to take photographs at the school for the 1900 Exposition Universelle in Paris.
Johnston’s pictures neither wholly celebrate nor condemn the Institute’s goals, but rather they reveal the complexities of the school’s value system. This is especially clear in her photographs contrasting pre- and post-Hampton ways of living, including The Old WellLinks to an external site. and The Improved Well (Three Hampton Grandchildren)Links to an external site..
Johnston’s photographs of the Hampton Institute were only a part of her long and productive career. Having started out by taking society and political portraits, she later extensively photographed gardens and buildings, hoping to encourage the preservation of architectural structures that were quickly disappearing. Her pictures documenting the changing landscape of early-20th-century America became sources for historians and conservationists and led to her recognition by the American Institute for Architects (AIA).

William Edward Burghardt Du Bois
First African-American to earn a Ph.D. from Harvard university in 1895
Co-founder of the NAACP in 1909
Du Bois wrote extensively and was the best-known spokesperson for African American rights during the first half of the 20th century.
Du Bois’s landmark study, The Philidelphia Negro” A Social Study (1899), was not only the first sociological study of African Americans, but it also set a precedent for methodology at the early stages of sociology as a field.
Du Bois strongly opposed Booker T. Washington’s Atlanta Compromise and its passive approach to racial equality in the time of Jim Crow laws.
In 1903, Du Bois published his opus, The Souls of Black Folk, a collection of 14 essays that opposed systemic white supremacy and openly supported women’s rights.
A proponent of Pan-Africanism, Du Bois helped organize several Pan-African Congresses to free African colonies from European powers.

Read the articles for all three of these pioneering individuals.
Notice how the purpose and direction of each of the articles is different. Think about the focus of each of these articles, what it expects the readers may know or be interested in, and what it does not as you are reading. Keep these things in mind as you craft your paragraph.
You can use the points listed in each guide, but you are not limited to using just those. Develop the closing for your paragraph that represents the focus, purpose, and audience of your own paragraph (hint: these are not the prompt and the professor. Pretend this was something you wrote for a job (not as something written for a hobby, club, or because your teacher told you to).
