1. Not all security experts agree about the value of biometrics. What are the advantages and disadvantages of biometrics?
“Biometric security is the use of biometric data for identification, access control, and authentication” (Molinaro 2022). They use physical or behavioral characteristics to use as a verifier for identity purposes. It’s the most accurate physical security technique used for identity verification but it’s not perfect. It has hardware components that store different data about you such as fingerprints, retina scan, facial recognition, behavior tracking, voice recognition; it’s converted to a digital format, encrypted and created to be a digital credential for your use. (Molinaro 2022) When trying to access, let’s say a cell phone which is popular on these devices, you may have a two-factor authentication which could be facial recognition and pin. If both are successfully authenticated, then you’d have access granted to the information.
The advantages of this are the accuracy of this function. It is really good but again not perfect. Nothing in this world is “perfect” but the chances of someone hacking with this enabled is pretty low especially coupled with other security measures. It’s very convenient; most new devices have these features ready to be used and is a quick step by step process that a toddler can even set up. When using something such as fingerprint or facial recognition it is so much faster than inputting a password. A password you may forget or misspell causing a delay where you can’t mess up your identity with your face or finger. Scalability is great with biometric data since it can be used for multiple functions, applications, software’s. Lastly, it’s difficult to duplicate so anyone trying to steal your biometrics would need your face, finger or voice, etc. (Fadia 2022)
There are disadvantages as well since again nothing is perfect. The problem some users have with facial recognition is, if you have a family member with similar facial features or a twin, they can most likely unlock your device. This would be called a false positive. If your biometric data is compromised, you can’t change it because it’s your physical features. The system can malfunction due to a bug as well. Lastly privacy is an issue. Many countries have adopted biometrics for surveillance on its societies which has a major impact on people’s rights. Other problems include certain apps such as Lensa Ai avatar generating app which can take your facial features, create a photo which it is designed to do but in its small fine print can legally submit images at its discretion without your notification or compensation. Privacy is probably the biggest problem because if biometrics are used in a business setting with IT security in charge of being the gatekeepers to your information such as fingerprints and data, in the hands of an insider threat, they can use it maliciously. Like I mentioned above, privacy is a huge issue. This type of data security can be used for good and for bad. Its good if you’re using it for security reasons to protect from anyone trying to access your devices or using them to enter private buildings or workstations. This can be an effective way to recognize who is who. I do believe it’s bad when a government uses this type of system against its people to surveil them 24/7 like some countries are adopting today. This is a huge infringement on a person’s rights to privacy. Nothing is uncrackable. At the right time, at a moment of weakness, attackers can somehow still obtain your biometrics without your knowledge or consent. Someone can record your voice, take a picture/video of you, somehow steal your fingerprint, etc. and use it to their advantage. Some devices use biometrics to understand your voice and use algorithms to better serve you as the “client” but some people fear certain devices like “Alexa” and “google” are always “listening”. People have become nervous or suspicious of these devices due to this issue. Biometrics can be vulnerable to breaches and then sold on dark webs (Wickramasinghe 2022). I would always say to be careful and don’t be naïve thinking your information cannot be stolen but I do believe biometrics are extremely useful for the protection of cyber security. Can using biometrics for surveillance be good? Yes, to a certain extent, as long as is not for tyrannical purposes but used for protection of citizens or used to solve criminal cases. But people have the nature to do both good and evil. I would still support the use for biometric data usage.

When it comes to biometrics there are differing opinions. Here are some advantages and disadvantages of biometrics. The first advantage is that it offers improved security. They can help enhance security by verifying the identity of an individual before they are granted access to a secure facility or to sensitive information. Biometrics are also very convenient, at least for the user. Authentication is usually quicker than traditional methods and users do not need to remember a username and password or carry a separate ID or badge. The last advantage is integration. Biometrics can be used on many different systems, such as mobile devices, laptops, and also security systems in order to provide a secure method of identification.
There are also some disadvantages of biometrics as well. The first is that they are expensive to implement. It requires specialized hardware, software, training and support. There are also privacy concerns as well. The data from biometrics is very personal and sensitive, so it has the potential to be misused. Lastly Technical limitations are a disadvantage of biometrics, they can be affected by lighting, aging and also injury which could result in rejection or a false acceptance (Thakkar, 2019).
The concerns that privacy advocates should have about biometrics are the following: Data security, lack of control and government surveillance. Data security, biometric data is very personal and can be used for malicious purposes like identity theft or fraud. The data in databases can also be a target for hackers. Lack of control with biometric data, once the data is collected from the user they have little to no control over who has access to that data. That can lead to privacy concerns. Lastly, government surveillance. Biometric use by the government has been used for surveillance purposes and it can enable the government to potentially track and monitor individuals (Akbari & Jain, 2018). I agree with the concerns. They are all valid concerns and they are all possibilities that could potentially happen.
