1. Find the question/problem posed at the beginning of each DAP chapter in “The Problem” section. If you are unsure of the question, check with me for clarification. This is important.
2. Read “The Background” section to gain some context. The Background is a secondary source written by Wheeler and Glover (in the 21st century).
3. Keeping the question/problem in mind, read the primary sources (from the 17th, 18th, and 19th centuries) offered in “The Evidence” section. The primary sources will help you develop your answer to the question/problem. That answer becomes your thesis (or argument).
4. The primary sources offer evidence to support your argument. A strong paper will show that you have read and thought about all the primary sources. The sources may contradict each other or complement each other. You don’t have to cite every source in your paper, but good papers show that you have considered all the evidence. Select some powerful quotations to support your argument.
5. Now begin to write. State your thesis in a brief introductory paragraph. Do not use first person. Make a declarative statement without saying “I think that ….” You are the author, so it is implied that what you assert is what you think.
6. The rest of your essay should, in clear, clean, and concise prose, support your thesis with evidence from the primary sources. Your ideas are important, but so are the grammar, spelling, punctuation, and paragraph construction that you use to communicate those ideas clearly. Pay attention to these.
7. Remember: it is not necessary for you to consult any outside sources. DAP has compiled the sources for you. Also remember that this is an analytical essay. You are making and supporting an argument; you are not writing a summary.
8. A bibliography is not required. You are all using the same source. Let’s save some trees.
9. When you quote, cite the source in a footnote. Historians use Chicago citation style; that is what you will use. Microsoft Word will do much of the work for you.
