This is the first part of the Cultural Understanding Project (CUP 1). You will write an intellectual autobiography about yourself in reference to the course theme (i.e., Asian/Asian American culture, diversity, sociocultural perspectives, social justice, etc.). Autobiography is a story about your thoughts, perceptions, knowledge, and experiences regarding Asian and/or Asian American (A/AA) people and/or cultures. In this intellectual autobiography, tell a story about yourself by presenting your personal, professional, and academic stories referring to A/AA people and/or cultures. The following questions must be included when writing your intellectual autobiography:
Social Identity Portrait
What are the words/images that come up to you instantly when you hear about Asian and/or Asian American (A/AA) people and/or cultures? List at least five examples and elaborate.
Describe your experience and/or knowledge about A/AA people and/or cultures. How much do you think you know about A/AA people and/or cultures? What lived experience related to A/AA people and/or cultures do you have? What are “label(s)” you have heard to describe A/AA people and/or cultures? How do you think/feel about these labels?
Experiencing Diversity and Discrimination
When was the first time you had the experience with A/AA people and/or cultures in your personal life? Have you had any positive and/or negative experiences about A/AA people and/or cultures? If so, describe your personal experience in detail. Have A/AA people and/or cultures impacted you at a personal level (e.g., as a person, a tourist, a student, and a parent)?
When was the first time you had the experience with A/AA people and/or cultures in your professional life? Have you had any positive and/or negative experiences about A/AA people and/or cultures in a professional setting? If so, describe your professional experiences regarding A/AA people and/or cultures in detail. What impact did it have on you at a professional level (e.g., as a teacher, a counselor, a therapist, an office staff, etc.)
Experiencing Societal Changes
If you had a chance to live in an Asian and/or Asian American cultural context, would you expect any difference of practices or values in the culture compared with your own culture? What differences do you expect to have? Why do you expect such differences?
