Consider the movie Gattaca, and answer the following discussion prompts.
Compare Anton and Vincent, the two brothers. How was Vincent able to beat Anton at swimming despite Vincent’s weak heart?
If we were able to exclude the eccentric, the different, the misfits, and the weak, what would happen to society?
What limits should be placed on genetic engineering? Should it be allowed at all? Should it be limited to the elimination of disease and physical imperfections? Why or why not?
Vincent’s parents visited a doctor who specialized in child conception to select for the best traits for his future brother. They hoped that his
brother would have the best possible chances for a successful life. Some of the traits mentioned in GATTACA included intelligence, height and any possibility of inheritable diseases. If you decide to have a child one day and are given the opportunity to select for special traits, would you do so? Why or why not? (Initial post worth 5 points)
Respond to a classmate on a point you disagree with, describing why you disagree. (Response post worth 5 points)
student post (HER NAME IS ALLISON)
Vincent was able to beat Anton at swimming because he had the drive and determination to keep going. In fact, at the end of the movie when they play one last game of chicken, Vincent says he was able to win because he never saved anything for the swim back. If we were to exclude people that are weaker or different, then our society would be very manufactured and sad. Your genes do not determine your worth. If people try to decide who is valuable and who isn’t, then I believe we see situations like the Holocaust. A group of people decided that another group was genetically inferior, and decided to take matters into their own hands. This was unjust and terribly cruel. I believe that we are better off if we treat all humans as valuable, because they are, no matter their diagnosis or genetic disposition to disease. It is hard for me to say what limits should be placed on genetic engineering, because it would be amazing if we could eliminate more diseases that hinder humans. However, as seen in the movie, I think that our society would exclude and discriminate against anyone who either is not a genetic masterpiece or was born a “faith” child. I currently would not want to choose my child’s traits because I do not believe that I should have the power to do so. I believe that God is in control and will take care of my family. My children will be valuable because God loves them, not because of what society deems valuable.
