This assignment is divided into 4 parts.
Part (15 pt.) https://www.youtube.com/watch/XRZ5X5Nnx6w What is a standard Blues song? Leonard Bernstein presents (at a young people’s concert) the elements of a simple blues song: Please start the timestamp at 18:20 to 23:50. Write a review on the parts that Bernstein. Be as thorough as possible. You may wish to listen to other parts, but you are responsible for timestamps from 18:20 to 23:50.
Part II: (30 pt.) Folk and world music in the Concert Hall: Address each of the 3 videos and just the beginning of video 4, separately: Answer this: Discuss the lecture/demonstration from each of the 3 videos presented by Leonard Bernstein. When Bernstein features the Chavez’s orchestral work, focus on the scales and rhythms and what Bernstein says about them. Include parts that were most obvious to the nature of folk music representing the style in the music. Some timestamps will be provided especially for the Chavez work. In addition, add a conclusion for each video recording 1- 3
Video 1: Begin at Timestamp 2:30 to 9:58: https://www.youtube.com/watch/F1kyhQHyuGg&t=40s
Video 2: start at timestamp 0:00 to 0:26 then timestamp 5:20 to end of short video https://www.youtube.com/watch/dGDu5BVcssI
Video 3: is a continuation of video 2. 00:00 to 1:45. Next, focus on rhythms and instruments used from timestamp 8:46 to the end. Include how they are used and how they may represent the specific folk music region. . https://www.youtube.com/watch/Z2jKaUlizuI
Part III: The next two videos present some interesting ideas about music orchestration.
Video No. 1 addresses the concept of bringing music instrumental colors to represent something specific within a work. This video is extremely short and very basic. It only touches on a small part of the music demonstrating how composers choose their orchestral colors. The example that Bernstein presents does not, in any way, delve into so many other parts that must be constantly considered when writing for orchestra, opera, ballet, or concertos.
Visual artists see colors; composers see color by way of orchestral colors. Orchestration is highly complex and takes a lot of practice to find the correct mixtures. Bernstein also mentions that for every few orchestral measures, there are hundreds, if not thousands of possibilities. Not many composers are actually successful in the art of orchestration.
(10 pt.) https://www.youtube.com/watch/sR4LwtIf1g8&t=104s Video # 1:Anatomy of a Symphony orchestra: Answer this: For Anatomy of a Symphony orchestra, write a minimum 100-word review on what you learned and discovered in this presentation. Keep reading! Bernstein mentions orchestral doubling, but he didn’t discuss orchestral interlocking, juxtaposing, and many more devices used when writing for orchestra simply because his presentation was geared toward a young, school-aged, audience.
(15 pt.) https://www.youtube.com/watch/IvgyfqzLC0A&t=1214s Video #2: Respighi’s Pines of Rome: Children playing under the Pine Trees; Now listen to the entire two minutes and 40 seconds of this Work. Catch the muted trumpets at timestamp 0:29 as if they produce a “toy trumpet” sound. Be aware of the harp glissando at 0:49, and two more audible times. At 1:09 there seems to be a teasing and mimicking section and finally, near the end of 2:46, the trumpet blares out a “bully” type sound.
Answer this two-part question: In this work by Respighi, Which timestamp examples were easiest to identify and why? Were you able to identify the Bernstein examples provided by my timestamps? Did these samples help you to better understand the process that a composer thinks when orchestrating a work? All too often students relate music to Disney Films or cartoons. Please don’t!
(10 pt.) In conclusion, what did you personally gain from Anatomy of a Symphony Orchestra compared to your knowledge on the first day of class?
Part IV (30 pt.) Ancient Chinese Opera: https://www.youtube.com/watch/ePSDPHQoQ2A
