1) In 1981, George T. Doran developed SMART goals as a framework for setting goals. He created this framework to ensure that managers had a solid template for creating meaningful, and detailed objectives for their goals. Setting goals should always be done with an action plan otherwise it will fail. It requires “plenty of thought and purpose” (10 smart goal examples for your whole life, n.d.). SMART is an acronym that stands for specific, measurable, attainable, realistic, and time-bound. The goal should be specific, meaning, there should be no confusion as to what it is. It should be a goal that can be tracked, and it needs to be realistic. The goal should also have a target date for completion. Learning how to use Maximo, an asset management software, is one of my career goals. Mondays and Fridays are our slowest days at work, so I will train with my co-worker for an hour. The goal is attainable because my coworker knows about it and will remind me of it as well. This goal is something that I can accomplish and by April I will be proficient in Maximo.
2)An important goal that I have established for my career is to use my job’s resources to earn a master’s that will only further my skills in my career field. It will also be an opportunity to network. Because my job pays for my education and many other certifications, I plan to use that as stepping stones for self-development and growth.
The SMART goal concept refers to how to create and set goals. SMART represents setting specific, measurable, attainable, realistic and time-bound goals (Kennedy, 2020). My goal requires planning ahead of time so I definitely think applying the SMART goal concept is crucial to its success. For example, I will make this goal specific by choosing what courses and certifications to focus on that are related to my field of study. It will be measurable by calculating how long each course will take to complete and using time-management skills to dedicate ample time to complete each chosen course. The goal is attainable because despite the challenge that is a master’s education, I have the support needed in both my professional and personal life to obtain it. The goal is realistic because finances will not be an issue and neither will time management as my job allows time-off when pursuing an education with them. It is a time-bound goal because the dates to achieve the goal are pre-determined by the school already and I would just have to pick and choose what schedule works for me that will get me the end result by my chosen deadline.
