Overview:
Chapter 17 covers a new case in this edition, South Africa, which ended the racially based apartheid system in the 19902. Also combining market capitalist, socialist, and traditional elements, South Africa has had a highly complicated history that weighs heavily on its present, politically, socially, and economically. The “fifth wheel” of the BRICS group, it has suffered along with others from being too dependent on commodity exports and thus subject to the vicissitudes of their volatile prices.
Chapter 18 discusses the Mexican economy, which has had a state-dominated form of technocratic corporatism.
