1 It is the year 2026. Thanks to your impressive ASU degree results, you have been employed by the prestigious Colorado Institute™. The Institute is a leading non-profit think-tank, which seeks to develop political, business, and social leaders by encouraging them to discuss great works of literature in intensive seminars. Your task is to select three extracts, taken from either or both of Titus Andronicus and Richard III, and write a discussion guide for leaders of a seminar on the topic of ‘ethics in leadership’.
Your assignment should consist of:
your three chosen extracts (no more than 50 lines each – you may make cuts to speeches, but show where you do this)
up to 250 words on each selection aimed at the leader of the seminar, outlining your reasons for choosing it, and mapping out possible areas for discussion
You will be assessed on:
appropriate, thoughtful, and creative choice of extract;
clear and convincing explanation of your selection, laying out what you understand by ‘ethics’ and ‘leadership’ and how this differs from the positions represented in the texts (if it does);
demonstration that you understand the need for texts to open up discussion rather than close it down;
clear and persuasive writing aimed at the leader of the seminar
2 You are directing a production of either Titus Andronicus or Richard III. Which scene do you think would be hardest to direct, and why? Your assignment should identify the play and scene, and then explain what you see as the difficulties, and how you would overcome them in performance in not more than 750 words.
You will be assessed on:
thoughtful choice of scene which demonstrates a thorough knowledge of the play;
clear delineation and convincing explanation of the difficulties which shows you have thought about the challenges and opportunities of performance;
imaginative and possibly innovative directorial choices
3 Pick one speech or brief section of either play (no more than 50 lines) and rewrite/translate it into modern English. Give a commentary of no more than 500 words on what you changed, what you didn’t, and why. Please note: there are commercial translations of Shakespeare into modern English available, so be careful to avoid plagiarism. However, you can compare your own translation to a commercially available one in your commentary if you wish.
You will be assessed on:
the effectiveness of your translation: does it capture the sense of the original? is it stylistically consistent, or appropriately inconsistent? does it demonstrate an understanding of the language? [20%]
the clarity of your commentary: are you aware of the difficulties of the original and have you thought about your audience? have you communicated your process? [80%]
