My challenge involved me being a youth flag football coach. I had some parents sideline coaching telling me where and when to play certain kids in order for the team to win. So parents were worried about winning over sportsmanship I was also directed by the head organizer to make all the playtime fair and equal, as well as to give each of the kids a chance to play each position if they desired. The key players would be the kids, the parents, and the head director.
Length: Paper: 6 – 8 double-spaced pages* (excluding title and references pages)
Classical and contemporary leadership theories offer leaders a “toolbox” of approaches and solutions that
can enhance their leadership effectiveness in addressing organizational issues. In this assignment, you
will analyze the value of different leadership approaches in resolving a real-world issue. In essence, your
leadership challenge is a case study in which you will assess the effectiveness and impact of applying
three different leadership theories or models.
Leadership Challenge Paper Guidelines
Prepare and submit 6 – 8 page paper* that briefly describes the situation, defines and applies three
leadership theories to the situation, and reflects on insights gained. A well-constructed paper will
reference 4 or more scholarly sources including 3 journal articles such as those assigned and retrieved
from Brandman’s virtual library, and adhere to APA standards.
**NOTE Try to avoid heavy reliance on secondary source (i.e., Northouse). Draw from the assigned
articles as they represent original source.
**NOTE2. A well-constructed paper has a brief (one paragraph) introduction to the paper, and a brief (one
paragraph) conclusion. Sub-headings (as presented here in the syllabus) are used to guide the reader
from one section of the paper to the next.
**NOTE3 Written in first person
I. Situation Descriiption
In no more than one page, describe the leadership challenge which may be an organizational problem,
a new initiative, and/or opportunity. In the descriiption, position yourself as the leader, and identify areas of
concern, key players (names optional), and your goal(s) in addressing the challenge. The leadership
challenge described should be consistent with the one approved by the instructor in week 2, and used in
the discussion board in weeks 2 – 4.
II. Leadership Theories and Models
Select three (3) of the following classic leadership theories or models: Leadership Grid, Situational
Leadership, Path-Goal, and/or Leader-Member Exchange that are most relevant to your leadership
challenge. Define and describe the components of the selected theories using four (4) or more scholarly
sources including three (3) journal articles.
** NOTES. Start this section with a statement of the three selected theories. Present them in
chronological order (as the theories draw from those before). Then briefly describe the selected theories.
Acknowledge the author(s) of the theory – they are not written by Peter Northouse. When describing the
theory, please use the terminology as presented by the authors. State why these 3 were selected for your
case study. Draw from the assigned articles as they represent original source.
III. Application of Theories and Models
Analyze your leadership challenge through the lens of each selected leadership theory providing explicit
and direct links to the components of the theory or model as they relate to the situation. Based on your
analysis, draw valid conclusions on the impact and value of each theory in addressing your challenge.
**NOTES: In Section II, you selected, defined, and described three theories to apply to your leadership
challenge. In this section, you will apply these to your leadership challenge. Discuss each theory
separately, again presenting in chronological order. Using the terminology as presented by the authors,
apply the components of the theory to your case study. Be sure to describe the situation and/or followers
before stating your leadership style … each of these theories suggests that the most effective leadership
style is based on the situation or follower, not necessarily your preferred leadership style.
If you disagree with the theory (such as employing S2 for a D1 follower), “defend” your opinion with
support from the readings.
IV. Reflective Analysis
In 2 – 3 pages, reflect on your effectiveness as the leader in this challenge, discussing three (3) specific
insights you learned about leadership from this assignment, and identifying one specific action you will
take to enhance your leadership practice. In your reflection, describe what surprised you, the
effectiveness of the classic leadership theories in addressing your challenge, and how your thinking
and/or behavior changed.
**NOTES: Please note that this section carries almost the same weight as the theory descriiption and
application sections. This is not meant to be an afterthought. Please address each element.
Please review the grading rubric below … it is the basis for evaluation.
* I am more concerned with “coverage” than page length and realize that if each item of the
assignment is covered “thoroughly”, the paper will likely exceed 8 pages.
