1. Gold Diggers of 1933. For this film, let’s focus on historical context.
The history of Motion Pictures, do the Hollywood Production Code reading, and watch Gold Diggers of 1933. For this film, let’s focus on historical context.
A. Do you think the final production number/song “Remember My Forgotten Man” is an anti-war statement? How? Why or why not?
B. In addition to the short films on the extra credit list for this week (comedy short, travel short, cartoon, newsreel), if you’d gone to the movies in 1933, there would have been a second film included in the price of admission — a “B” picture, one of lower production values, less well-known cast, and lower budget. This was in the heyday of the Studio System when motion picture studios owned the means of production, exhibition, and distribution.
C. How is this different from movie-watching today? Not just online movie-watching but actually going to a theater to see a film. Don’t choose superficial areas for comparison… relate the change in going to the movies to current events and not just today’s current events, but current events affecting the way movies were made and exhibited/distributed in the past.
Directions: Your post must be well thought out and have some substance to it. Use examples/evidence to back up your statements. Include details from the films (scenes, dialogue). Write at least a full paragraph of at least five complete sentences for each question.
2. The Adventures of Robin Hood
Let’s focus on Errol Flynn and his performance in this role — this film made him a star. He’s charismatic, vigorous, charming, athletic, sexy, handsome… and he makes it all look very easy. By the way, he did a lot of his own stunts in this film. He plays the role straight, with none of the edge, darkness, or complexity of later Robin Hoods (like Kevin Costner or Russell Crowe). To a great extent, he is a Robin Hood for his time.
Do you think there is an actor today who could do this role in the same way, with the same zest and charm that Flynn brings to it? Without an edge or a dark side? Who? Why? Why not?

3. Discussion: the Maltese Falcon
This film is considered the first, and still one of the absolute best, film noirs ever made. It has all the earmarks of a great film noir — the femme fatale, the shady hero/anti-hero, the urban setting, the characteristic lighting, and the complicated/confusing plot (among other elements).
And by the way, there are film noirs where the plots are so complicated nobody can really figure them out. If you liked this film and want to see more of Bogey in another classic film noir, and to really be confused by a plot, watch The Big Sleep. He stars with Lauren Bacall, a very fine actress with a long, varied career (and his eventual wife, at least when that pesky divorce from his wife came through). Compared to the plot of The Big Sleep, The Maltese Falcon is a piece of cake.
So… speaking about that complicated and confusing plot…
When did YOU know what Sam Spade was actually up to?
What was he trying to accomplish?
Does he have his own code of honor?
When did YOU know who murdered Miles Archer?
Directions: Your post must be well thought out and have some substance to it. Use examples/evidence to back up your statements. Include details from the films (scenes, dialogue). Write at least a full paragraph of at least five complete sentences for each question.
4. Symbol of the Unconquered
This film clearly evidences stereotypes and prejudices, not just about black people, but about white people, too.
A. Write at least a paragraph of at least five full sentences listing and describing the stereotypes influencing the portrayal of the black characters in the film.
B. Write a second paragraph of at least five full sentences, listing and describing the stereotypes influencing the portrayal of the white characters in the film.
C. What gender stereotypes do you see in the film, and how does Micheaux show them? Or how does he go against the stereotype? Write at least one paragraph of at least five full sentences.
Directions: Your post must be well thought out and have some substance to it. Use examples/evidence to back up your statements. Include details from the films (scenes, dialogue). Write at least a full paragraph of at least five complete sentences for each question.
