PART 1: This Research Proposal and Annotated Bibliography assignment is the first section of your Independent Inquiry Project.
This proposal is your guide for the other three sections of your Independent Inquiry project which will lay out the basic facts of the site, what is silenced in the making of the sites public history, and the political work that the site’s representation of history does.
This proposal will require you to narrow your topic and to think long term as you formulate the argument that you will make in your analysis and interpretation of your chosen historical site. In order for the exercise to be meaningful to you, you must do some thinking, reading, and preliminary research before crafting your proposal. A proposal completed early in research helps you to figure out if your project is feasible and sets the stage for feedback from the instructional team.
Your 2-page research proposal must include the following clearly stated:
A creative title for your final project
The name and location of the Texas public history site you will be researching
A descriiption/justification of your site that answers why this site is of interest to you and others, how the historical site is relevant to this course, and what themes or topics from the course will be central to your research project
A tentative thesis statement for your final project
Your proposed research methods (archival, ethnographic, interviews, surveys, etc.) and how you will execute them on your final project
Your proposed final project format (you should choose between an opinion editorial, a narrated slideshow, OR a narrated video; if you change your mind by the end of the semester and want to use another format for the project, that is allowed and you need not ask for permission to do so)
Your 2-to-3-page annotated bibliography should lay out your preliminary sources, both primary and scholarly. Your annotated bibliography should include at least 3 scholarly sources referenced using the correctly formatted chosen citation style
Each 1-paragraph-long annotation should include:
A very brief summary of the source
An assessment of why you chose the source
A plan for how you will use the chosen source in your project
PART 2: Remember that at every step of this scaffolded Independent Inquiry assignment process, students will engage in self-assessment. Your 1 paragraph self-assessment report and self-assigned grade out of 10 should be attached as a cover sheet to your submission and be based on the rubric below.
Your self-assessment cover page, research proposal, and annotated bibliography should be submitted as a single PDF or Word document
