As noted in this module, propaganda was an important tool by the different powers involved in World War I, including the United States. For this discussion board activity, you will be analyzing one short film of your choosing and making a post about it. Admittedly, there are other World War I movies I wish I could have assigned. However, many of these other movies were not properly preserved and no longer exist. For example, I wish there were still copies of a film called To Hell with the Kaiser. In this film, the German Kaiser made a deal with the devil to conquer the world. However, upon his defeat, the Kaiser committed suicide and immediately went to hell. This film, like most other WWI propaganda films, simply do not exist anymore. We know what they were about because we have descriptions from the time period summarizing the plot. Sometimes we have still photos from the movies but that is the extent of what remains. Two of the options for this journal focus on World War I films that are still in existence but there is a third option
Directions: Select one of the options below and write a journal entry of 300 words or more with specific references to the film or sources you read.
Option 1: Please watch this movie from 1918 called Sinking of the Lusitania (Links to an external site.).
In writing your journal, consider some of the following questions: How did the movie portray the sinking of the Lusitania? What do you think the filmmakers wanted the audience to feel about Germany? How did the filmmakers attempt to affect the emotions of the viewer? Were there parts of the movie that confused you?
If you would like some more background on current thinking regarding the rapid sinking of the Lusitania, this article looks pretty good. (Links to an external site.) The underlying idea is that the ship, was in fact, carrying munitions. However, whether it was these armaments that caused the second explosion, or whether it was an explosion in the coal bunker, is up for debate. What is clear, however, is that, despite what the film says, the German submarine did not fire a second torpedo.
Option 2:One Hundred Percent American starring Mary Pickford (Links to an external site.)This film is more focused on the home front and urges Americans at home to think about how they can support the war effort. What does the Mary Pickford character do to support the war? How does the movie portray the other characters in the film? Were there parts of the movie that confused you?
