GWS 141 Final Research Paper
Informed by course materials and individual academic interests, write a final research
paper that articulates a unique research topic and questions, addresses them through
original data analysis, and reflects on the significance and implications of the findings. Papers should be Times New Roman, 12
font, double-spaced 5-7 pages (excluding references page and any images).
Deadline to submit your final paper on December 8, Thursday, 5pm. Upload as a word
document to the drop box at the course website.
1) Choose a topic and ask research questions. Informed by class discussions, define a topic
that is limited enough to allow you to focus on in a term paper but open enough to allow you
to engage with the larger issues of culture, gender, and capitalism.
2) Conduct a mini-research. Read/listen/watch and take notes on a modest amount of
visual, audio and/or textual content such as advertisements, tv shows, a movie, postcards,
zines, etc. In your paper, clearly describe your data and explain why you picked it. Analyze
your data in the light of your research questions using one or more of the methods we
practiced in class.
3) Analyze. What does your examination of your data tell about your research questions?
Consider how the phenomenon you analyze is shaped by the intersection of gender,
sexuality, race/ethnicity, and class inequalities. Reflect on the significance and relevance of
your findings.
Paper Checklist:
-Title and subtitles
-An introduction containing your research topic and questions
-A description of your data
-References to at least 3 course sources
-A conclusion reflecting on significance of your findings
-A references page with coherently formatted citations (choose a style like MLA, ASA, etc)

What I wanted to write about:(topic)
Topic: Fairytales
Question 1: How do little girls get affected by the fairytales in their future lives?
Question 2: Is there a difference between children who were told fairytales when they were younger and children who just went straight to bed?
Choose one question from the top or create a question about fairytales compared to the culture that is now!
I chose to write about fairytales and how they affect children at such a young age, especially little girls who thrive to want to be treated like these princesses are. Girls are very easily seen as the weakling and are therefore seen as needing a prince in order to be strong and safe, which in many cases is what many fairytale stories show such as rapunzel, cinderella, snow white and even sleeping beauty. These specific movies show the little influenced girls that men have to constantly be by their sides in order to feel safe and protected when going outside of your safe zone. Most of these movies as well show the women as very nice and considerate and naive as well which in many cases makes the little girls feel as if they have to be like that in order to get a prince and be saved from their little bubble that they have been kept in for so long. The data I want to analyze is “Zipes, Happily Every After,” as well as “Martin, Hetero- Romantic love and Heterosexiness In Children’s G-Rated Films.” They both talk about the topic that I want to discuss in depth and explain why what they show in the movies is wrong because of the heavily influential ability these movies have on the minds of the little kids who watch it, especially the girls who feel like they have to act a certain way in order to feel the same way these princesses do.
