Purpose
In the reading, Jon Lewis provides an analysis of how visual editing and soundtrack work together to provide a memorable effect in the baptism sequence in The Godfather. Our discussion for this Module focuses on how editing and sound in Raging Bull masterfully conveys the tragic life of boxer Jake La Motta.
Instructions
For your Initial Discussion Post due by Sunday 11/13 at 11:59pm, please respond to the following prompt below in a post of at least 300 words. You do not have to address every detail of the prompt, but your post should contribute to the discussion and not merely repeat what has already been posted by your classmates. While I encourage you to offer your personal views of the films in this Module, please refrain from unproductive summaries of story or plot and/or why a film is “good” or “bad.” Assume that everyone in the discussion group has completed the viewing assignment. I suggest that you draft your post in Word first and assume that something may go wrong in Canvas when you hit ‘Post Reply.’
For your Response Post to one classmate due by Sunday 11/13 at 11:59pm, expand the discussion by replying in 75 words or more to at least one classmate’s post. Responses may include describing your own insight related to the post, providing additional information from assigned or outside content, disagreeing respectfully by describing your own interpretation, proposing a new idea, or asking a question. I cannot give full points to posts that merely “like” another post; the response post must demonstrate substantial effort.

(Write like you’re talking to her.)
Classmate Tiffany’s Post:
The scene I choose from the movie ranging bull is the scene at 25:22. The reason I choose this scene is because it is where the two main protagonists are meeting and I liked the scene and how I can analyze it more. In the scene we can see, that Jake meeting Vickie. The scenes shot is interesting because it kinda hints at a barrier behind the two. Jake is married and Vickie is a minor who seems to be classier than Jake is, it can hint at the wealth and or societal gap between both parties. The reason I found the shot and camera angle to be an editing style is because it showcases two different cameras having to be possibly used. One camera is outside on the street and one is on the inside in the swimming pool area. The editing as well can manipulate the sound of the scene, In some parts you could hear what was being said but in some parts you could not, which I think adds to the suspense and hesitancy of the scene, especially on Vickies part. As the scene went on, the jump cuts and such only added to the movie and can give the viewers a sense of their own interpretation on how to see where the movie will go. For example, when Vickie mentions that she likes Jack’s car, she is then seen in the front passenger seat riding down New York with him. That scene as well can be interpreted as, there is a line down the middle in the car on the windshield, it can be a call back to the couples age gap and how they come from different societal points in the film. These elements identify as what Martin Scorsese’s style is to do some jump cuts and the slow motions and freeze frames which we can see later on in the film.
Your analyses should refer to course materials and reflect on how film style and history function. A post that earns full points will not merely agree with course materials but will visually illustrate ideas in the reading. Do not forget to include embedded media (YouTube clip or images) that visualizes the example(s) in your post. Please make sure that you read all of the posts in your discussion group before posting. I cannot give full points to posts that duplicate examples or YouTube clips. Please limit your posts to no more than 400 words and 1-2 examples to give others a chance to write about key scenes/shots. I suggest that you resize your screenshots and images to ‘Large’ in the ‘Image Options.’ The ‘Image Options’ tag appears above or below an image when you click on it while editing in the Rich Content Editor. Please choose one shot/scene from Raging Bull and embed a screenshot(s) or YouTube clip into your post. Describe how the editing in the scene creates a unique experience for the audience. You may wish to address slow and stop motion, camera position, and/or sound. How do all of these elements work together to create what we may identify as Martin Scorsese’s (and editor Thelma Schoonmaker’s) signature style? You may reference Lewis’s analysis of the baptism sequence in The Godfather for an example of how editing manipulates image and sound to create a unique experience.
