The exercise is attached in documents sections (I copied the questions down below.) Complete the problems exercsie. Note that I have provided an Excel file attached to help you complete problem #1 and to complete the excel file. Please complete that and submit your Excel file as well as the pdf for the assignment.
Remember to show all work and lay out your solution in a clear, logical order that you would understand if you looked back at it 10 years from now. Please as well type up all work and answers in a legible format. I have as well attached a few files which I was provided by my professor that contain notes and equations/formulas on both the topics of air stripping and bioremediation which you should use to complete the exercise.
Air Stripping
Use the uploaded Excel spreadsheet to help you do this calculation. 1. Your factory produces a waste stream of 1000 gallons per day containing 200 mg/L of chlorobenzene. Find the total volatilization rate, KLa, for an air-stripping tower that has a diameter of 2 ft, is packed with 13 mm polyethylene Berl Saddles (from tables, you find that for this packing, at = 466 m2/m3, F = 240). The air blower will operate at 50 gpm, and the system will operate at a temperature of 20 degrees C. You look up the diffusion coefficient of chlorbenzene in air, and you find DG = 7.627×10-6 m2/s. You also look up the vant Hoff equation parameters for chlorobenzene to get the Henry’s constant in units of atm m3/mol: A = 3.47, B=2690 K. 2. You need to reduce the chlorobenzene concentration to the MCL of 0.1 mg/L. Use your result from #1 above to find out high tall the tower needs to be to adequately clean your water. How tall would your tower need to be (include a 20% safety factor)? Bioremediation
3. You are going to use a bioreactor system to clean up a waste stream containing 100 mg/L of phenol. Your waste stream flows at a steady rate of 7 m3/d. From lab tests, you have found the following parameter values for the bacteria acting on your waste stream: Ks = 4 mg/L, k = 5 mg phenol/mg biomass/d, Y = 0.7 mg biomass/mg phenol, and kd = 0.1/d. You would like to use a 25 m3 CSTR reactor. a. What would be the output phenol concentration? b. Will this meet the regulatory limit of 20 g/L?
4. There are two types of waste: 1) Wastewater with dissolved polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), and 2) Wastewater with dissolved BTEX (benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, and xylenes). For which of these two wastes would bioremediation be more appropriate? Fully explain why it is more appropriate and why the other waste is less appropriate?
