Analysis
Find a quote that has one of the literary elements, which then needs to be connected to one of the human experiences/conditions in the paragraph. Both literary elements and human experience/condition need an explanation of how they are connected to each other(4-6 sentences). Also, identify the key elements of fiction used by the author (e.g., setting, plot, characterization, POV, etc.) and explain how they are related to the cultural experience. Distinguish it from other cultural experiences (e.g., biases, cultural values, unique experiences) by referring to specific details from the text(1-2 sentences).
In total each quote should have a 5-8 sentence analysis paragraph.
Human experience/conditions:
Loss/Pain/Grief
Recklessness
Greed
Romantic Conflict
Laziness
Temptation
Distraction
Resilience
If you are able to come up with your own human experience/condition, you are welcome to talk about it.
Literary elements:
Diction- Words with emotions and feelings, or in other words charged language. (Diction is never a sentence but 1 or 2 words)Look for patterns in the language
Repetition of words/language
Effective diction is specific and concrete: very clear
When you are writing an essay in which you are analyzing the diction of the writer: Avoid saying: “The writer used diction…” – since this is obvious (diction IS the words on the page; without them, the page would be blank ).
Instead, say: “The writer creates a ______________diction through the use o f . ” OR “The language of the text is___________________.”
Tone- is the writer’s attitude or feeling about the subject of his text.
Symbols/Symbolism- A symbol is an object that represents a larger, usually abstract idea or concept. What symbols can you spot in this slideshow? What do they mean? Look at objects, colors, repeated things and see if there is a deeper meaning to them.
Imagery- when an author uses incredibly descriptive language in order to paint an image in the reader’s mind. Imagery relies heavily on stimulating the senses: taste, touch, sight, smell, and sound. What’s an example of a famous descriptive phrase? Think of one to share!
Figurative Language: Metaphor- makes a comparison between two things that are unrelated but share some common characteristics.
Simile- makes comparison between two things that are unrelated using like or as.
Hyperbole- exaggerated statements
Personification- when an object or animal is given human experience/conditions.
Idiom- a phrase that is used as a common saying or expression
Alliteration- a series of words that have the same starting consonant
Theme- When you analyze a passage from a story, ask yourself what’s the overall, universal message. What is the author trying to convey in this section?
Paraphrase (context) for the quote (Answer the following questions in 1-2 sentences)
Who is speaking to whom?
What is taking place in the quote?
Where is this taking place?
When does this occur in the poem?
Element of the human experience/condition
Quotation
Paraphrase (context)
Analysis
Ex. Greed
This column asks you to record the exact phrase or sentence that you believe demonstrates the concept on the left. Cite in MLA format.
(cite line numbers).
Who is speaking to whom?
What is taking place in the quote?
Where is this taking place?
When does this occur in the poem?
This is about the importance or significance of the quote.
In order to do this, answer these questions:
What is the significance of the quote? What does it reveal about the human condition?
Take a special look at the use of language–particular words, phrases, the tone of the work, symbolism or metaphors.
Apply the close-reading strategies and analysis skills we’ve used and developed in class (SIFT, analyzing diction, imagery, etc.)
