Prepare a post (250–500 words)
While you have only just begun your program, the readings in this unit have already provided you with perspectives about counseling as a field of study and practice. For your initial post in this discussion, consider what you have learned about counseling from the unit readings, especially Kaplan and Gladding’s 2011 article, “A Vision for the Future of Counseling: The 20/20 Principles for Unifying and Strengthening the Profession,” and respond to the following questions:
What issues do you imagine will be most challenging for you as a counselor-in-training? Why?
How might online resources play a role in helping you address the challenges? Respond to this after reflecting on the work you did in this unit related to Internet resources.
How did you decide on the specialization that you chose? What others did you consider, and why? Respond to this after considering the different specializations addressed both in the Counseling: Masters Research Guide and in the variety of professional associations in the counseling field.
How would you articulate at least two differences you have come to understand between counseling, social work, and psychology, based on your review of Mellin, Hunt, and Nichols’s 2011 article, “Counselor Professional Identity: Findings and Implications for Counseling and Interprofessional Collaboration?” Why is it important to know the distinction?
Background Info about me- My name is Kimberly Mejia, and I’m originally from the Bronx in New York but currently reside in Queens. I can’t wait to take this course and learn more about counseling! I graduated with a bachelor’s in business management. I’ve always wanted to work in the counseling field, but before I started my master’s degree, I wanted to get some business experience. I intend to work at the school where I am currently employed as a guidance counselor after completing my education at Capella University. I am currently working as an Advocate Counselor in a high school located in the Bronx, New York, a role I have held for the past two years. My role involves serving young adult students as a primary motivator and coordinator of program services. Working with diverse groups Helping ‘at-risk’ young adult students to eliminate the barriers they face in accessing quality education and employment and assisting soon-to-be graduates in making their college/scholarship applications have made me realize the joy and fulfillment that comes with helping those in need. Working with these individuals has opened my eyes to the fact that many of the things that we take for granted in life are hard to come by for many other people. I come from the Bronx, a dangerous neighborhood, and every day I encounter and interact with people who struggle to make changes or adjustments to life or overcome dependencies. My experience working as an Advocate Counselor has enabled me to realize that while I do not have solutions to everyone’s problems, I have the ability to positively impact many young people’s lives by becoming a Guidance Counselor. Therefore, I believe the skills and experience accumulated in my previous roles will help me navigate practice and learning-related challenges and successfully complete my master’s in School Counseling.
