Hi Dr. Lent,I am excited to take this class and learn more about how to counsel diverse populations. This news article about a High School football star was brought to my attention. To summarize the article, Mike Hawkins is one of the best football players for his town, Allen in Texas, he is being looked at by OSU and Alabama. During the night, someone spray painted “We don’t need you in Allen” followed by a racial slur. To handle this, his family has decided to move out of the town and Hawkins will quit playing football for Allen. I think 10 years ago, this news story would have been perceived in the same way as it is now. It is a shame that Hawkins and his family feel like they need to move out of the football town their son has become quite successful in, but it is also understanding why they would feel the need to do so. I am honestly surprised that this does not have more media coverage. This is something I would have expected to get more media coverage because football is such a popular sport and Hamlin was put in a horrible position by someone within his own town. I do not think this news story is going to age well because the town is not able to do much about it. In the article, the author states that they are looking for the perpetrator but I am unaware of just how hard they are looking. The statement written on his door is a very threatening statement and it needs to be taken seriously. I think if anything, people may look back on this as one of those stories where “if someone would have done something when it happened the issue could have been solved”.
