On Wednesday, April 25, 2018, Police arrest the Golden State Killer, Joseph James DeAngelo, 72, in a home in Citrus Heights, California. DeAngelo killed 12 people, raped at least 45 people and burglarized more than 120 homes in the 1970s and ’80s. He was a former police officer, and his time being a patrol officer partly overlapped with many of the crimes he is accused of committing.
The Sheriff stated that Mr. DeAngelo will not be charged for a series of rapes authorities believe he committed in the Sacramento area in the late 1970s because the statute of limitations has expired. Sheriff Scott Jones of Sacramento County stated that Mr. DeAngelo is being charged for six murders in Ventura, Orange and Sacramento Counties.
How was the Golden State Killer identified? The answer is through forensic science, especially DNA and genealogy. Mr. Holes, the lead investigator of the cold case, created a fake profile pretending to research family history. However, while most of the DNA samples from the cases had been deteriorated, he came across never-touched DNA sample from a 37-year-old murder in Ventura County that was sitting in a freezer.
Holes uploaded DNA information into a genealogy site and a match was made with a relative. The first links appeared on GEDmatch leading to Mr. DeAngelo. The cases were solved when investigators were able to match DeAngelo’s DNA with the murders of Lyman and Charlene Smith in Ventura County in 1980.New technology in Forensic science, especially DNA and genealogy, led to the arrest of the Golden State killer.
