Search for a real-life case involving a criminal prosecution or accusation that interests you. Look for a case that brings to mind a few of the terms listed on the Key Terms lists appearing at the end of each text chapter presented in Unit 1 (Chapters 1-4 in the textbook.) Cases may be found in a variety of places, such as:
Targeted websites about criminal cases, such as:
https://www.fbi.gov/history/famous-cases (Links to an external site.);
https://www.justice.gov/usao (Links to an external site.);
https://www.crimemuseum.org/crime-library/famous-murders/ (Links to an external site.);
https://www.insider.com/true-crime-us-2018-4
Note: Most cases will be after arrest and/or prosecution, so that information is available for your analysis. The case may be something from years ago, or it may be relatively new or ongoing. Select a crime from a crime type that interests you, e.g., white collar, sex, drug, public order. This assignment provides an opportunity to focus on a crime type/category for students’ own individualized interests. Also, you should not use a case that is discussed in detail (i.e., for more than one paragraph) in the text or terms that the author notes are more fully discussed in a different chapter.
After selecting your case, complete a case study report of it. As you will see by what follows, a summary of the case is only one part of a case study. You must be able to make clear connections of the case to our chapters, thereby demonstrating that you’re meeting the learning objectives for the course. Therefore, make sure that you choose a case with topics that allow you to make these connections. Demonstrating that you can find and select such a case and develop these chapter connections is a part of the assignment.
After selecting a case, look at the terms you pick to write about this time must appear on the Key Terms lists that appear in the text after the chapters assigned in Unit 2 (viz., Chapters 5, 7, 8, 9, 10 & 11.) Recall that Note that Chapter 6 was not covered in Unit 2, so do not consider terms from that chapter. Please note that not all of the terms defined in the margins of the text also appear on the Key Terms lists, so be sure you are picking terms from the lists. Pick one term from three different chapters that you feel is demonstrated by the case you selected. You’ll have a total of three terms. None of the 3 terms will be from the same chapter of the text. You will not have 6 or 9 terms; you will have 3 terms to address in your case study. Your case study will include a summary of the chosen case, definitions of the 3 key terms you selected, and an explination of how each of those chosen terms is shown in the chosen case. The case study must be organized and use the headings & subheadings set forth in the format section below. I will reject a case study that does not meet the formatting requirements and give it a grade of zero. Do not move ahead and use concepts/terms from chapters that we haven’t yet covered. Any Unit 2 term appearing in this case study will be ignored and not worth credit.
Use the following modified APA format for your case study:
APA title page (you can quickly confirm APA requirements by viewing the sample linked below)
[no abstract – please skip this]
Body of the case study – Write 3-4 pages following APA style on spacing, margins, in-text cites, and using the bold headings that appear below
Summary of the case
In this section of the case study, tell me where you found the case. Next, descibe what happened to result in the defendant(s) arrest(s) and the criminal charges that the defendant(s) faced. Use your own words. The case should be sufficiently summarized so that I do not have to look up the case myself (if that happens, I’ll penalize the paper) but not so detailed that it makes up the majority of the paper.
Key term #1: [name the term from a key terms list] – Chapter [# of chapter it came from]
Definition: Here, just define the term. for example, if you picked the term mens rea define mens rea fully (including the various MPC levels)
How it applies: Here, explain why you think the term is evident from the case you chose. In other words, show the link between the term and the events in the case that you picked. Continuing with the mens rea example, identify the case facts that demonstrate that the person’s conduct did/did not show the required mens rea for the crime existed or why there was argument over the mens rea required. Use appropriate paragraph structure and including details from your case to help develop and explain your connections. After completing the analysis of the first term, move onto the second term and repeat the process. Repeat the headings.
Key term #2: [name the term from a key terms list] – Chapter [# of chapter it came from]
Definition:
How it applies:
Key term #3: [name the term from a key terms list] – Chapter [# of chapter it came from]
Definition:
How it applies:
Conclusion: Here, write a brief conclusion (approximately 1 paragraph) summarizing the three concepts that related to the case.
References page (you can quickly confirm APA requirements by viewing the sample linked below)
In sum, the case study will be approximately 3 to 4 double-spaced pages (with APA margins, etc.) of substance (i.e., excluding the title and reference pages.) With the title and reference pages, the total report will be 5-6 pages. Please note that I will stop reading the substance at the top of any 5th page.
