1)In my own words, community policing is becoming part of the community instead of just policing them as if we are not humans too. If you become one with the community and show them that we are people too and not just a group of angry people looking to take their money and put people behind bars, they are likely to trust you and cooperate with you. Through trust, transparency, and public cooperation, any jurisdiction is bound to see a reduction in crime.
Name and discuss two examples of community policing done by officers in your town or county.
My department has an entire team dedicated to community policing. The Bureau of Community Engagement team does things such as community cook outs, attends parades, hosts multiple events for the unsheltered and attends other sponsored events, attends neighborhood HOA meetings, attends special council meeting in the unincorporated areas of the county, and many other activities that put them in direct contact with the public. My School is hosting an event next month called Dads, Deputies, and Donuts. This is where SRO’s and patrol units come together with students and their dads just to open up a line of communication and to show the youth that it is ok to meet with and speak to police officers.
Problem-oriented policing is the idea of identify a specific crime such as car theft in a high crime area and identifying ways to reduce or eliminate those crimes. This is a proactive approach compared to typical policing efforts in which police just respond to calls, take a report, and that is the end of it.
My department takes a great deal of action when it comes to Problem-oriented policing. As I mentioned, our team attends community meetings to help educate residents on how to lessen their chances of being a victim. If only unlocked cars are having things stolen from, and you start locking all of your cars, criminals are less likely to target your neighborhood. We also attend council meetings to hear specific complaints, open a dialog with, and assist high crime areas with reducing crime.
2)Community policing is a philosophy and strategy of law enforcement that emphasizes building relationships with the communities they serve. The goal of community policing is to address the source of crime and disorder, not just responding to individual incidents. Community policing believes in proactive preventive measures as well as working together with local resources for problem-solving.
One example of how community policing can be put into practice is the “Coffee with a Cop” program, which is held in many towns and cities across the country. The program allows community members to meet local police officers in a casual setting, such as at a coffee shop or community center. This helps build trust between the police force and residents, while also allowing for open communication about concerns and issues. Another example of a crime prevention program in my area is the Crime Prevention Unit. They provide support for creating neighborhood watch programs, and if they detect any crimes, they help community members to report it.
Problem-oriented policing is a philosophy and strategy that focuses on addressing the underlying causes of specific crime and disorder problems in a community. This approach, which differs from traditional policing efforts, seeks to identify and address the root causes of issues before they become large problems. By doing this, problem-solving techniques may be more effective in reducing crime rates overall.
Officers in my town have worked with community members to develop crime prevention strategies such as providing resources (like money and programs) to at-risk youth, increasing lighting near hotspots for crime, and providing educational programs (classes on how criminals think, ways to prevent crimes from happening, etc.) in order to reduce crime.
