Objectives: The objectives of doing this research paper are
1) to use communication research skills to investigate one or more intercultural communication issues, 2) to analyze the issues to develop some intercultural communication competence, and 3) to present the research findings to educate others to develop intercultural communication competence.
Procedures of doing your study: Students should start from the beginning of the class to look for intercultural communication issues and work on the research paper. You may use your personal experience, class discussion, the readings, journal articles presented by others and library search to determine your research topics. The instructor will spend some time in the first few weeks to give students some opportunities to determine their research topic. It is anticipated that each student should finalize their research topic and start doing literature review by the fifth week. (Anyone should feel free to send questions to the instructor at any time) After you select the topic, you should start your search related journal articles to write a literature review which is used to frame your research questions or hypotheses. Then, you should collect your data. In this class, we encourage students to use various research methods in data collection for this final project.
Completion of your research paper: Students should follow instruction closely to complete the paper. The paper should have the following components: cover page, abstract, introduction, literature review, research question, method, results, discussion and reference. Please use the paper grading rubrics to guide you to complete the paper. The final research paper should be 10 pages long with at least 10 references. The textbooks can be used as references in the final paper. The due date of the paper is on the last day of the semester. Students are encouraged to submit their research paper to conferences and some incentives will be provided to those who plan to submit their research paper for conference competition.
