Abstract: This is a one paragraph summary of your experiment and the Result/Brief Interpretation of what it means.
Abbreviated Example: Asexual reproduction in jellyfish is a key component of their life history. Jellyfish polyps clone themselves to increase their population numbers which ultimately leads to greater numbers of adults observed in the world. To test how (insert the variables you are using, (e.g., temperature and feeding)) impacted polyp growth I conducted an experiment to test this using ( insert basic methods and variables ). Results from the experiments showed that (some variable) impacted polyp growth rates in the following ways (positive and or negative (too high, too low might be bad…..). [interpretation part]. This means that as some variable changes in the environment that we will see (more, less…. Based on your results) jellyfish in the future and this might mean….. [your interpretation]
Introduction
An introduction in scientific papers is about why the research is important. For this report, 2-3 paragraphs, talking about jellyfish (examples of ideas include: jellyfish life history, different types of jellyfish, asexual vs. sexual reproduction, global and local problems with jellyfish, what they eat, what eats them (food webs)). There is no specific best answer, this is up to you to develop. You should be using 2-4 references to support your introduction. I have links to Google Scholar on the topics for your review.
Methodology (Paragraph form)
Basic experimental design talking about the variables you chose, the conditions of the experiment (control vs. experimental treatments), the ‘length of the experiment, how many replicates, how you collected data (e.g., plates were observed weekly and the number of polyps were counted, any problems (with some trials and experimental conditions, polyps might just die one week and therefore there are zeroes (0) in your data set. Can you, should you adjust your results? Did you adjust your results (e.g., for trials which died, they were eliminated from future averages)? Please know that zeroes (0) are valid data points and do not have to be eliminated, but sometimes they for specific reasons. Sometimes a tank just dies (too hot, too cold if the heater broke, etc…), and it is OK to eliminate it from the experiment.
Results (Paragraph form)
This section is where your graphs and tables will be presented. However, they are accompanied by a written paragraph describing the results [Example: When I tested the response of increasing water temperature of polyps, polyp growth rate increased at each step with more polyps being generated as temperature increased (e.g., Figure 1 a-d (Figures 1-4), Table XXX) and it was much (higher, lower) than the controls.]. You just report it here, you do not interpret what that means, that is for the Discussion. You will present your data/results as well as the class results.
Discussion
This is the section of the research paper where you interpret and explain your results. How did your results from the variables you used differ from the controls is the primary point here for this report. Make reference to the graphs/tables in your results section to support your interpretation. This is also the place where external sources are used to compare your results to other scientific studies. This section should include 3-4 paragraphs. How you might approach the discussion: Reintroduce the biology of jellyfish and asexual growth;
Interpretation of YOUR results;
Compare YOUR basic results (increases, decreases, optimal conditions etc..) to other research (at least 2-3external peer reviewed papers used to compare your results);
Conclusions and (‘future ideas?))
