Required elements for the two types of writing:
UNR AUDIENCE – No matter what topic you write about, consider what will be different and what information students at the University need? Your story must make connections and provide information that is helpful to your audiences. It must tell us something we don’t already know and likely can’t find anywhere else.
FOCII – You will be most successful if you develop a story idea that is timely and significant (i.e. newsworthy) to our audience of University of Nevada, students. The best stories have a surprise or a conflict or an impact that will touch people in our audience. Stories need to have action or reflection and tell us something new and truthful. Whether you are writing a news story or pitching an issue for a non-profit, the key is telling an actual story about a person, place or thing. Spend some time reviewing Chapter 1 in Filak – there is an overview of FOCII, the elements the attracts an audience. Your story or media kit must capture one or more of these elements – Fame, Oddity, Conflict, Immediacy and/or Impact.
FACTUAL – Your story should be factually accurate and meaningfully true. All names and facts should be triple-checked. Any insinuations, assumptions or stereotypes should be eliminated from your writing. Attribution should be provided for all assertions and you need to have talked with the people you quote for the purposes of this story. You need to provide accurate descriptions of the people you talk with and provide contact information for each person you quote in the story.
SHARP AND CONCISE – The third required element is sharp, concise news writing that incorporates strong nouns and verbs. Sentences and paragraphs should be carefully constructed and use proper grammar, syntax and AP style. Headlines, subheads and captions should include verbs and relevant keywords. The information should be organized in a way that is easy to understand and follow, and ideas should flow logically from one point to the next. The writing should incorporate the news formats we’ve been learning in class and follow AP style.
News Story
Your news story can be hard news or a feature, on any newsworthy subject you think would be of interest to your readers. You can write about sports, the environment, an issue on campus, money, employment, fashion, culture, science, business, religion etc. You’ll need to interview at least three people relevant to your story and choose interesting, concise quotes to tell your story. You’ll also need to refer to at least one secondary source and if appropriate, incorporate data into your story for context and background.
You need to write at least two social media posts relevant to either the reporting or distribution of your story.
Media Kit (Public Relations)
To do this assignment, you’ll need to select a real organization (a non-profit, club, or business) and imagine that you are the organization’s public relations coordinator. Your job is to read as much information about the organization as possible and find an event, a person or an issue connected to the organization that you can make newsworthy and pitch to a journalist and the public. You’ll need to identify what you are promoting and what you are asking the public to do in response. PLEASE NOTE: A good PR pitch requires you to develop a strong. news story using the FOCII elements. Then:
Write a fact sheet summarizing at least 10 relevant facts, with data, about the organization/issue that you are promoting ). More on facts sheets Links to an external site..
Write a short email pitch to a real specific journalist who specializes in the subject of your organization (you do not need to send the email, instead write the pitch. More on Pitching Links to an external site..
