I’ll have to say that over the past few weeks, I’ve surprised myself tremendously! It’s been a long time since I was last in College and fear of not being prepared is what kept me away. But like riding a bike, you never really forget; just takes a minute to get in the groove. I feel I have a better understanding of college students now more than I did before the course. I feel better equipped and prepared to teach a course when and if the opportunity presents itself. Through my interviews and talking with peers and colleagues about this endeavor, it’s allowed me to mentally prepare myself by simply saying things aloud.
My practical lessons were “re-discovered” more than learned this semester. This course however reinforced and reminded me that preparation, motivation and self-regulation/time-management are the most vital strategies for me to be successful as a student and teacher. In the book, Motivation and Learning Strategies for College Success, the author states “The main factor influencing the effectiveness of your learning these skills is your ability to manage the various elements of your behavior.” (Dembo, 2020). These 3 factors (practical lessons) are what have/will keep me on track in this program and allow me to perform at the best of my ability.
I’ve also learned how to integrate faith into academics and how internal and external factors enhance motivation. UCLA conducted a 7-year study and found that “Religious Engagement during college is associated with a raising of students’ degree aspirations, greater satisfaction with college, and a strengthened commitment to promoting racial understanding” (UCLA, 2010). It also discovered 3 important findings while analyzing the results of the study:
Exposing students to diverse people, cultures, and ideas through study abroad, interdisciplinary coursework, service learning and other forms of civic engagement helps students value multiple perspectives as they confront the complex social, economic, and political problems of our time.
Meditation and self-reflection are among the most powerful tools for enhancing students’ spiritual development.
Providing students with more opportunities to connect with their “inner selves” facilitates growth in their academic and leadership skills, contributes to their intellectual self-confidence and psychological well-being, and enhances their satisfaction with college. (UCLA, 2010)
I know I’m better prepared for this journey having taken this course at this time of my life. I’ve learned a lot from everyone in the course and I hope to meet some of you when we finish.
