I need two journals done. During the course I want you to keep a journal of fieldnotes on your observations of and interactions with food and foodways. This is not a daily journal of your food intake and calories.
What I want you to do is to note down your observations on food in all of the various ways you encounter food in your daily life. These can be advertisements (in print, TV, radio, billboards, fliers, signs, on the bus or in the metro and menus), actual encounters with food in a store, at home, in a restaurant; programs about food or references to food on tv, radio, movies, video games, blogs etc. Your conversations with others or overheard conversations with references to food and eating or drinking. You can also talk about what you eat. The main goal is to be observant about food and take notes on those observations. I also encourage you to take photographs, draw pictures, and use maps and diagrams. You should describe these events and encounters with a good amount of detail and some analysis. I would like you to try and do this every day in a notebook.
Each submission should be a minimum of 500-600 words (typed up in a document). I encourage you attach any photos (if you have hand drawn items you can scan or photograph them and attach the images). These notes do not have to be typed up into any specific form, just have your raw observations on food and foodways for the day (or days if your submission covers multiple days) with your thoughts and analysis. Try to tie them to topics we have discussed, and readings from the course. You can pose questions that you come up with about food, culture, and foodways. But, write them in a way that would be useful if you were to use them to write a research paper on food
