1.Marie Curie developed aplastic anemia from being exposed to radiation. Aplastic anemia is essentially the inability to produce blood cells, including RBC’s, WBC’s, and platelet cells (1). Exposure to radiation can cause someone to develop diseases, such as aplastic anemia, because radiation is known for killing or damaging our cells. In this case, it is the stem cells found in our bone marrow that is damaged, or killed off, that causes aplastic anemia (1). These stem cells are responsible for the production of our blood cells. Therefore, Marie Curie ended up pasing away due to her inability to fight off infections, because she was unable to produce WBC’s. WBC’s, or white blood cells, are responsible for fighting off infections and are a part of our immune system. So without them, Marie Curie became more vulnerable to infections, and it’s also why she would experience recurrent and prolonged infections. There are different types of WBC’s, and they all work together in order to protect us from infections. Neutrophils are the most common type of WBC, and are most responsible for the removal of bacterial infections. Eosinophils are WBC’s that help to fight parasitic infections. Basophils work to fight inflammation and allergic reactions. Monocytes are able to differentiate into different kinds of cells, however, they mostly work to destroy bacteria and infected cells (such as viral cells). Lymphocytes are the WBC’s that are used for recognizing antigens in order to identify a foreign invader (2). Since Marie Curie was no longer producing enough blood cells, such as WBC’s that are used for immune defense against infections, this is why her body was incapable of protecting her from these kinds of infections.
2. Aplastic anemia is when the bone marrow in our bodies slows down or stops producing blood cells, which prevents the body from producing new white blood cells. Marie Curie’s low monocyte, lymphocyte, and plasma cell count caused her to experience many recurrent and severe illnesses. Due to her aplastic anemia, she did not have enough of these cells to fight off infections, which is why they continued to occur. One variety of white blood cells is the monocyte. They are created in the bone marrow, then transported to the blood. They help other white blood cells eliminate damaged or dead cells and fight many infections. Another type of white blood cell called lymphocyte is an immune system component. B cells and T cells are the two primary subtypes of lymphocytes. B cells use antibodies to combat foreign bacteria, viruses, and poisons. The T cells destroy the body’s cells that have contracted viruses or developed cancer. Finally, plasma cells produce antibody molecules that target the pathogen and kill it. Her immune system was very low, and she was getting infections that her body could not fight against.
