Assignment[1]
The choices we make in presenting our self to others are often directly influenced by the reasons and circumstances. Our assumptions and expectations of other’s evaluations of us are also linked to these circumstances. For this assignment you will prepare two versions of your “self” to present to others and solicit feedback on how successful you are. Additionally, you will be evaluating the presentation of others’ selves for business and more personal interactions. Lastly, you will reflect on the process, criteria, and feedback that comes with this process.
First:
Go to the website photofeeler.com and set up a free account.
Submit a photo of yourself for the “Business” category. This may be one you already use for a professional purpose (such as LinkedIn) or one you take specifically for this assignment. It should be a photo you would use for professional purposes.
To get feedback on your photo, you must evaluate the photos of at least 10 other people. As you do this, take detailed notes (your data collection) as you review the profile photos submitted by others. Do this for the Business photos, noting:
The categories on which you are asked to rate photos;
The “quick notes” that would allow you to offer additional feedback;
And observations or patterns in the images you are evaluating.
Once you’ve reviewed and collected data on photos in the Business category, submit a photo of yourself for the “Dating” category. This may be one you already use for dating purposes (such as OKCupid, Tinder, etc.) or one you take specifically for this assignment. It should be a photo you would use for dating (Please note: Don’t worry, you are not actually signing up for any online dating sites!)
Again, you must evaluate at least 10 other photos before you will get feedback on your own image. As you do this, take detailed notes (your data collection) as you review the profile photos submitted by others. Do this for the Dating photos, noting:
The categories on which you are asked to rate photos;
The “quick notes” that would allow you to offer additional feedback;
And observations or patterns in the images you are evaluating.
Note the scores and feedback you get about your own two images.
Second:
Once you’ve collected data for the two categories of images you evaluated as well as the feedback you got on your own two images, write a paper that includes:
The two images you submitted as well as your own assessment of why these images are appropriate for their respective categories (Business or Dating). What self do you think you are presenting? How would you describe this person (that’s you)? How do you feel about the self you’re presenting here? How are you engaging in impression management (personal front, setting, appearance, etc.)? What thoughts or factors are guiding you in this role taking behavior?
A discussion of your observations of the photos of others for each of the categories. How do people seem to construct distinct images for these different categories? Do you notice similarities or differences based on age, gender, race, occupation, or other characteristics?
A consideration of the way the program Photofeeler might influence evaluations by the characteristics presented for assessment (note that these are different for Business and Dating). How might the available “quick notes” influence some of the feedback offered? What impact does the “title” have on your own evaluations of the Business profile photos you see?
A reflection on the feedback you received on your own photos. How did you experience role taking? How did you experience the looking-glass self? Based on the feedback of others, would you do something different for these profile pictures?
An assessment of the value of a service like this. What can people learn from having strangers evaluate their images?
Complete papers should be 2000-3000 words in length. You must use and cite relevant course material in your paper (show me you’re using it!). Use ASA citation style for all in text and reference citations (don’t forget the value of the Purdue Online Writing Lab for ASA styleLinks to an external site. citations and references).
