Now that you’ve explored some content about climate change, you’ll put your learning to use.
Imagine that someone in your life needs persuading that climate change is an emergency calling for an immediate response. Select three to five pieces of material from our course or the anthology to use to convince the person/people of the pressing need for humanity to take action.
Whom you choose for your audience is up to you. Is it a friend? A coworker? A family member? Yourself? The more resistant an audience member you envision, the harder you will need to work on persuasion, and the more utility you will get out of this assignment.
Once you have your audience in mind, read “How to Talk about Climate Change” by Katherine Hayhoe in All We Can Save (pp. 105-111, Reframe). Hayhoe offers some great suggestions for how to reach those who may same unreachable, and you watched her TED talk recently.
Your goal in this essay is to present a thesis, i.e., a single idea. Your thesis should be tailored to your chosen audience, and it should use clear language to persuade them that the climate is in a state of emergency.
Use your body paragraphs to share the evidence that you think is most likely to reach your audience, and quote from a source at least once per body paragraph. Along with what you learn from Hayhoe, also try some of the persuasion techniques in the attached presentation to convince your reader.
If you have a picture of your audience member, you might find it helpful to have it handy as you compose. What motivates this person? What do they care about in life? How can you connect their passions and their humanity to the challenges of climate change?
In your introduction, share a vivid image, tell a personal story, or offer a bold opinion (these are all strategies for strong introductions in general). The very last sentence of your introduction should be your thesis. In your conclusion, revisit your thesis and try to “close the deal” with your audience.
Keep in mind from the beginning of your writing process that you’ll share a publish with your peers as well as the instructor. Also, check out the sample student paragraphs/passages from previous semesters in the Word document below.
Process
1. Do some brainstorming, decide on an audience, review the assigned materials and the discussion boards, and make some notes (and maybe make a few “toasted quote sandwiches”).
2. Start publishing, doing your best to transition from one idea, sentence, and paragraph to the next. Organize your body paragraphs however you see fit, but do organize them. There’s nothing more powerful and memorable than a well-constructed paragraph.
3. Put a solid four pages together for your rough publish.
4. Title your publish “Dear ____________.” What fills in the blank is your intended audience. Here, you are following the style of Cameron Russell’s essay in All We Can Save (“Dear Fossil Fuel Executives”).
