Misinformation about sexual orientation can contribute to homophobia. Think about your school and discuss whether you think it is a safe and accepting space for members of the LGBT community. What could you and your peers do to make your community more accepting?

I myself have not been on campus as of yet. I hope that it is accepting to all no matter, sexual preference, nationality, or sex. I believe it has gotten a little better then it was with acceptance. I know there is a lot more to work on. I agree less education on the topic contributes to homophobia. It is important to discuss this topic, the more one is educated the more it seems they have an open mind and less judge mental. Be open to learning more, don’t go in with a negative attitude, just because you may not agree with something doesn’t make it bad. I may not agree with some religious beliefs but I don’t think it is bad each person has their own. People are different and we should be able to choose who we want to be with, it is nobody else’s place to decide that. As peers we can help educate, and continue being accepting, and teach others the best we can.

In all honesty, I don’t really have a formed opinion about Grossmont and its acceptance/safe space for the LGBT community, as I am not a part of it. However, I do know that Grossmont does have a LGBT safety spot for those who are members of the LGBT, though I don’t know if it’s effective for those members. Something we could start doing to make our community more accepting is to stop using derogatory language toward members of the community. We can also stop pushing them to tell us why they’re part of the community or try to dig into their love life. We should acknowledge their choices with respect and not disdain and wait for them to open up to us. We should always be respectful of their choices and not try to put them down for their lifestyle.

After watching the TedTalk video I had a better understanding on how HIV affects a human body. HIV’s main target are the T cells inside of the body. The way is starts spreading/growing is because it replicates along with the T cells within the body making it spread faster and wider. Compared to other diseases, HIV is unique because it does not have a cure yet. Having HIV is having a permanent disease (until now) that requires daily medication no matter what. One thing most diseases that apply to HIV/AIDS have in common is that they get transmitted by having sexual contact.

After watching the TedTalk the lesson I learned more information on how HIV/AIDS affects the body and how easily it can break down our cells which can affect our immune system, that are designed to fight certain infections. HIV is so unique because how powerful does this disease have to be like how it says in the TedTalk “there has been one cure out of 70 million”, that to me seems very powerful and unique.
