Getting Started:
The expectations for your professional writing is shaped heavily by your work roles. In this project, you will begin to identify professional positions you are interested in one day holding.
Through this module, you will begin to identify potential employers you are interested in working for (or begin to look more closely at your own current employer if you’d prefer). By the end of the module, you will create an Application Letter and Resume for a currently advertised specific job opening.
Along the way, we will learn some expectations for business letters and resumes and also practice skills on some of the more common writing mistakes so that you can begin to recognize and refine them in your own writing.
Project Details:
You will submit an application letter and enclosed resume in Canvas to a current job opening you would be potentially interested in having as part of your professional career. This can be a job for which you are qualified and are actively applying for or it can be a “dream job” you would have interest in at a later part in your career after you have gained more work experience.
Your application letter will adhere to the “Elements of a Business Letter” outlined in Table 9.1 of Chapter 9.2 in our textbook. Your letter will also demonstrate use of “Strategies for Effective Letters” outlined in Chapter 9.2: https://open.lib.umn.edu/businesscommunication/chapter/9-2-memorandums-and-letters/Links to an external site.
Your resume will use one of the resumes outlined in Figures 9.11, 9.12, and 9.13 as a model resume: https://open.lib.umn.edu/businesscommunication/chapter/9-5-resume/Links to an external site.
While we learn more about the the importance of ethics in your resume creation during this module, for the sake of this assignment you can choose to provide a factual resume of your current qualifications or a resume you aspire to at some point in your career (in other words you can dream a bit in this assignment–why not apply for the Chicago Bears general manager position?! (if it were open)).
