You can choose to view a media source that relates to your specific topic, or you may choose to watch one that focuses on related themes, overarching sociological theories, or similar or parallel events in society. A list of recommended media sources related to each theme is listed below. In addition to the long-form media sources listed below, you may also choose to watch supplemental clips. However, these are optional and should be watched in addition to a documentary, TED Talk, YouTube clip, news clip, or judiciary hearing.
Assignment Instructions:
For this assignment, you should compose a 3-5 paragraph, double-spaced mini-essay in which you do the following:
In no more than 2 paragraphs, provide a summary of the media source. Here, you will include a brief synopsis and state the main ideas or arguments displayed.
Evaluate the perspectives portrayed in the media piece. Consider some of the following questions in your analysis: Whose viewpoints are represented? Do you believe the viewpoints are representative of reality? If so, whose reality is represented? Does the media source help illuminate perspectives that are often ignored or omitted? Think about gender, race, and class (and intersecting relationships), as you formulate your response.
For the remainder of the paper, describe how this media piece relates to your specific research topic. Does the media piece provide theories that will be useful to your analysis? How are the ideas or events portrayed in this piece connected to your own topic?’
Conclude your analysis with a reference list in APA format. The only citation required here is the media source. However, please note that including additional sources from your textbook or news articles may be useful or necessary to connect your analysis to broader sociological theories.
You are welcome to explore any media clip of your choice, as long as it is sociologically grounded, (meaning that it explores social patterns in society among groups – not questions of biology, psychology, or another discipline). The clip that you choose to analyze should relate directly to the theme of your Creative Project and Essay in this class.
