The development and training department is responsible for developing new employees and ensuring all staff members are equipped with the necessary skills and knowledge. This team is comprised of individuals, such as former faculty members and academic advisors. The learning facilitators work with department leaders to deliver training programs and develop policies and procedures. Some examples are:
Employees can schedule times for their mandatory training, which can be done in person or online. These exercises focus on addressing the needs of the organization and its employees. Some other types of training commonly offered include diversity and inclusion, leadership, customer service, and wellness.
To improve staff development, employees can participate in various offsite activities, such as conferences and workshops related to their roles. The institution generally pays for these activities. For instance, staff members can travel wherever they want to attend a workshop or conference.
Every employee is assigned a mentor who has been successful in their previous role and meets weekly to discuss improvement strategies and challenges. In addition, they have one-on-one coaching sessions with the team lead.
Through mid-year reviews, employees can identify the skills and knowledge they need to improve their performance. This process can help them reach their goals and develop their careers. For instance, a career specialist can start at level one and then participate in the company’s career pathways program to develop the skills needed at level two.
Our training and health facility’s staff development program is focused on the institutional mission, and it involves regularly reviewing the effectiveness of our procedures and policies. This is similar to what I experienced in the military, allowing us to find new ways to be innovative and improve.
