For this discussion, review recent examples of current events in criminal justice that have sparked conversations about policy changes. 1) The district attorney of Manhattan, Alvin Bragg announced on November 17, 2022 that he requested the dismissal of nearly 200 convictions due to egregious acts of police misconduct (Meko, 2022). The cases dated back 20 years and disproportionately affected younger males of color. About a dozen New York Police Department officers were convicted of almost 400 felonies and misdemeanors related to their work as investigators.
The policies to prevent police officers from lying about evidence, engaging in misconduct, perjury, and evidence theft already exist. The courage of police officers and prosecutors to hold law enforcement officers found guilty of misconduct accountable for their actions is missing from official policy. Police officers who lose their jobs due to misconduct are often rehired within adjacent departments, despite their performance records.
I would like to see a complete understanding of how tainted investigations ruin lives and make the criminal justice system less functional for all involved parties. Prosecutors in other areas of New York and cities across the country, including Baltimore, Detroit, and Buffalo, are also taking strides to right wrongs made by former police officers. 2)The current event that I selected was the protests that erupted across China regarding the zero-COVID policy. There was a deadly fire that had happened in Urumpqi which killed 10 people and injured 9 people due to the firefighters were unable to get to the fire because of the lockdown policy in China. Residents decided to protest the zero-covid policy and seek for freedom and democracy. Residents even tore down the barriers and took to the streets to protest. This event affects the criminal justice policy in the future because if a state is on lockdown and law enforcement or firefighters or ambulances are unable to get to those victims who are in danger then basically it can be considered as murder. The government should make exceptions for when there is an emergency and be able to assist those who are in need of help. The criminal justice policy that relates to this event that needs to be adressed is the government in China lifting the lockdown and apologizing for those who lost their life in this fire and explain why they were unable to make exceptions for the firefighters, the ambulances, and the police. Someone in the government should have said something regarding the lockdown.
