Sampling Techniques:
You are asked to identify the sampling technique being used in each of the six scenarios that appear at the end of this assignment. A description of the potential sampling techniques are provided below: Simple Random Sampling: A sampling procedure that assures everyone in the population has an equal chance of being in the sample. Systematic Sampling: A sampling procedure in which a starting point is selected by a random process and then every nth member of the list is selected. Stratified Sampling: In stratified sampling, a subsample is drawn using simple random sampling within each subsample.
Convenient Sampling: The sampling procedure of obtaining those people that are most conveniently available.
Judgement Sampling: An experienced individual selects the sample based on personal judgment.
Quota Sampling: A nonprobability sampling procedure that ensures that various subgroups of a population will be represented on pertinent characteristics. Scenarios
I. in a study where a researcher wants to know what it takes to graduate summa cum laude in college, the only people who the researcher believes can off first hand advice about what it takes to accomplish this are individuals that graduated summa cum laude. The researcher decides the only individuals who should be sampled in this study are people who graduated summa cum laude. 2. A researcher divides the entire population of a college into different subgroups, and then randomly selects the final subjects proportionally from the different subgroups. The researcher organizes the population by college class and then randomly selects the appropriate number of freshmen, sophmores, juniors, and seniors that is representative of the whole college. 3. You want to obtain a proportional sample of 100 people based on gender. You find out the proportion of the population that is men is 60% and the proportion of the population that is women is 40%. You select a sample of 40 women and 60 men for your sample for a total of 100 respondents so that you will approximate the population.
4. A researcher collects all the names of the members of a school and puts these names on a list as potential participants in a study. To guard against any unintentional bias, the first member of the study every 10th person on the list is chosen for participation in the study.
5. A researcher uses subjects that are selected from a clinic, a class or an institution that are easily accessible to the researcher. The researcher also chooses five other people based on the their being the first five names of students listed alphabetically in his class as participants for the study as well. 6. A researcher uses a lottery method to select their participants in an experiment. Each of the members of a class is assigned a unique number. The numbers are placed in a bowl and thoroughly mixed. Then, a blind-folded researcher selects 10 members of the class. Questionnaire Design Discussion
I am always looking for feedback about assignments in this class for improvement purposes. This semester you have worked on three major project assignments to try and hone your business research methods skills. These projects are as follows:
1. You read a empirical research study examining factors which might predict an event (infidelity in a marital relationship). You identified strengths and weaknesses of this study and provided recommendations for its improvement.
2. You analyzed quantitative survey data (Sioux Falls Health Data) using SPSS statistical software providing answers to questions based on that data and made recommendations for management about the administration of health care policies based on that analysis. 3. You performed a qualitative research study of an organization. You identified a problem the organization is facing and using qualitative research methods with stakeholders familiar with the organization and problem and based on the qualitative analysis recommended solutions to help the organization solve the problem it was facing. In your discussion statement to the class, please select which of the three research project assignments that you believe has most helped you improve your research skills. Please identify why and how this assignment most helped your business research skills.
Your discussion statement to the class of no less than 50 words is due by Thursday, November 10th. Please also provide a response to another classmate of no less than 50 words about which of the three research project assignments that they believed was most helpful in improving their research skills. I need a response to Jeffs post :
I have found that working on the qualitative research project has been the most valuable for me. First, I chose a subject that is very relevant to my job, regarding people’s return to the office attendance. Interviewing and researching data has proven highly valuable to give me insights that are making me a better researcher but also a better global director of workplace experience. I am finding that although interviews take time, the time pays off in rich amounts of information that a survey would not likely reveal. The data analysis has been fascinating because data always tells a story. You simply have to be willing to put aside what you think you already know to understand the story the data is telling.
