Updating or changing the governance can be a sensitive and uneasy task since the changes can impact funding from donors and or other notable figures (Bevins et al., 2022). Despite how apprehensive schools may be about updating the governance and overall conditions for the university, it is necessary as “one size does not fit all,” (McCaffery, 2019). The overall increasing diversity of institutions can become a concern if the governance is not shifted to reflect the needs of the population of students. This loosely reflects the shared governance ideology from the communicative perspective. The perspective “cultivates a common understanding of institutional goals and direction and how individuals and departments contribute to this greater unifying good,” (McCaffery, 2019, p.50). While knowing that the change needs to happen, putting that into practice is where the true difficulty lies. It may be easy for a governing group to agree to changes, but the who, what, when, where or how those changes are implemented becomes the trial. Today’s universities could be enduring one of the most challenging times as the role and duties of universities have changed. Universities have begun to outsource more or even shift to less full-time faculty as the enrollment needs of students change. Some of these newer and abrupt changes developed as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. Universities were faced with unprecedented constraints in enrollment, which impacted a demand for online coursework. The shift in the economy also put limitations on the financial ability for students to pay for school (Bevins et al., 2022). Colleges and universities had to change admission standards since the learning scale was altered due to accessibility. As a high school counselor, I witnessed many schools transition into test optional admissions. This means students are no longer required to include an ACT or SAT with their admissions paperwork if their academic GPA is high enough. This is an example of a governing policy that schools adapted to develop effective strategies to maintain enrollment, among other challenges the pandemic presented. The Bible tells us “Not to withhold good from someone who deserves it, if it is in our power to do so,” (2011). Universities governance and shifting of acceptance policies, more financial aid availability or even freezing tuition despite the fluctuating and uncertain circumstances speaks volumes. Overall, schools can continue to be flexible and create clear and detailed pictures of where they want to be. When this goal is created, schools can better create a plan how and when they want to get there. This will help better adjust to the future challenges stemming from the pandemic (Bevins et al., 2022).
