1)
Watching the video and seeing how the government’s emergency management dropped the ball in New Orleans and then to watch them do the same in recent day Florida is really hard to stomach the policies put into effect were very minimal to the magnitude of disaster that they saw coming in both situations and took the threat very lightly. They didn’t think the storm would be as powerful and its alarming people get paid have the education and things like this still happen. I feel if they had evacuated and started preparations weeks earlier, it could of saved lives and prevented the amount of damage caused. They should have even devised more funding once the storm proceeded to be en route yet they went after lower income areas to do their version of the sever weather prevention and saved so the wealthy wouldn’t of had to come extremely out of pocket. As if those peoples lives didn’t mean as much. It’s still mind boggling people who have these careers could have made such a mistake as this. Hurricane management should have made evacuation preparations at least a week in a half early and made evacuation mandatory and not optional, once the weekend got closer they should of set up teams to check for leftover residence and to do last min spot check on the engineering that was set in place to keep the areas most effected safe to have minimal damage. They also should have started the preparation tactic early on, I just feel they had a slow response to such a threat because the damage happened mostly in low income areas if it were closer to the wealthy parts it think the response time would of been a lot different and more effective since money talks.
2)The flooding that killed 1,836 people in New Orleans and caused billions of dollars in property damage might have been prevented if the Corps had retained an external review board to double-check its designs of the new flood walls, built in the 1990s and early 2000s. Problems with obtaining, communicating and managing information plagued many other aspects of the response as well. FEMA lacked the tools to track the status of shipments, interfering with the management of supplying food, water, ice and other vital commodities to those in need across the Gulf Coast. Being prepared can reduce fear, anxiety, and losses that accompany disasters. Communities, families, and individuals should know what to do in the event of a fire and where to seek shelter during a powerful storm.
Federal government response to the state of emergency. President Bush signed a $10.5 billion relief package on the evening of 2 September, and ordered 7,200 active-duty troops to assist with relief efforts. According to the Federal Emergency Management Agency, there is now more capacity to prepare for disaster in advance of an expected event. Congress authorized the movement of federal resources to locations that are expected to experience a disaster before the disaster actually strikes.
